Until recently, four of the world’s greatest classical horse riding schools existed only in Europe. Late last year, the fifth established its roots in Abu Dhabi. Abu Dhabi Royal Equestrian Arts (Adrea) positions itself not simply as a riding academy, but as a cultural institution with one of the largest equestrian libraries in the world, housing around 14,000 books and rare manuscripts open to the public. Set on Jubail Island, it is the first school of its kind outside Europe. Its arrival here raises an obvious question – why Abu Dhabi? “Why not Abu Dhabi?” asks Gonzalo Marques Obeso, the academy’s chief rider. “Tell me which country in the world can have the vision to invest in classical horsemanship. Not one. Abu Dhabi is very involved in cultural and artistic projects, and this is both. The UAE is the only country in the world that can undertake that mission 100 per cent.”
