In his book, “Lessons for students in Architecture”, Herman Hertzberger describes architecture defined by the principle of spatial simultaneity. In his text, he promotes in-between spaces characterised by a shared spatiality where multiple planes coexist in a common, living habitat. Rather than viewing architecture as a static composition, Herzberger pictures spaces that invite movement, interchange, reflection and social interaction. He urges architects to recognise the richness of human behavior as a foundational element in the design process. Our research builds on this perspective by seeking to understand how people inhabit space over time. By tracing patterns of movement and interaction, we unfold the potential to simulate the latent choreography of passages embedded in architecture, capturing the unspoken ways people respond to spatial cues, define territories, and create meaning through use. In doing so, we aim to reframe architecture as a participant in shaping behavior, revealing the profound, often subconscious decisions made at the scale of the body in space. #SpatialAnalytics #ComputerVision #DataDrivenDesign #DesignWithData #BehaviorMapping #noumenadata

We’re diving into spatial data to reveal the invisible patterns behind spatial interactions—how age, gender, and subconscious behavior influence how people inhabit spaces. This animation visualises real-time occupation trends and studies uncovering the deeper behavioural flows that shape the space. For businesses, that means understanding customer preferences on a whole new level—and using that knowledge to optimise layout, service, and experience. #SpatialIntelligence #SpatialAnalytics #HumanBehavior #SpaceMatters#SpatialData #noumenadata

Understanding the texture of urban life, we turn to René Burri’s lens (Plaza José Martí, Havana, Cuba, 1993) as a reference. Introducing movement to this still image allows us to engage with multiple digital representations of the city, juxtaposing a single frame with computer vision-driven analysis to study human interaction within urban spaces. This post presents one of our latest explorations: Walkability—quantifying and tracking pedestrian-friendly spaces in Barcelona. The walkability mask visualization results from a study conducted on Valencia and Carrer del Consell de Cent between 2022 and 2023. By applying the YOLO detection model to camera footage from these streets, we extract and represent pedestrian flow. This analysis enables us to assess the spatial footprint of pedestrians while integrating key urban elements—including vegetation, bike lanes, vehicles, and other environmental factors—to measure their impact on walkability and urban mobility. #Walkability #UrbanMobility #ComputerVision #SmartCities #PedestrianFlow #noumena

Recently, we hosted Urban Futures at @rocabarcelonagallery , an event organized by @noumena.data and the @designinstitute_ofspain (D!OS). This platform was created to spark conversations and inspire action around the cities and societies we inhabit. Why did we do this? Because cities are at the heart of our collective future. They’re incredible inventions—complex, ever-changing systems that reflect who we are and who we want to be. As @tim_stonor reminded us, “cities are machines”—and it’s up to us to reconfigure them to meet the challenges ahead. With thought-provoking talks by visionaries like Salvador Rueda and David Colliaux, and the presentation of the first Urban Futures Awards, we set out to explore how we can design cities that are smarter, greener, and truly centered on people. This inspiring panel discussion was moderated by @mathimare . Thank you to everyone who joined us in making this first edition a success. Urban Futures is more than an event—it’s a platform to rethink how we shape our cities and our lives. #UrbanFutures #CityDesign #Sustainability #NoumenaData #DIOS #RocaGallery #BarcelonaEvents

A 3D Reconstruction from 360-Degree Video of the Iglesia de San Agustín in Belchite We are working to generate a digital twin of the historic Iglesia de San Agustín and use it as a tridimensional canvas for rendering the spatial dynamics and digitally mapping the physical traces of the visitors exploring the site. Built in the 18th century in Belchite, this church was bombarded during the Spanish Civil War. Today, it is in a state of advanced degradation, requiring fast intervention to restore its beauty. #CulturalHeritage #TechInHeritage #EPICProgram #Belchite #HeritageConservation #DataAnalytics #DigitalHeritage #HistoricLandmarks

Belchite’s Ruins, Devastated by the Spanish Civil War, in a 360º Video. This 360º video offers a comprehensive portrayal of the current state of Belchite. By leveraging computer vision and artificial intelligence, we can enhance our ability to document and analyze Belchite’s condition, detect patterns of decay and structural weaknesses, and monitor changes over time for targeted conservation. This is part of the “Elementos Patrimoniales Inteligentes Conectados” (EPIC) program. Collecting these images gives us detailed insights, which will inform the decisions for preserving Belchite's historical integrity. #CulturalHeritage #TechInHeritage #EPICProgram #Belchite #HeritageConservation #DataAnalytics #DigitalHeritage #HistoricLandmarks
