What does it mean to handmake a website, when AI systems can generate endless (more or less) sophisticated code in a matter of seconds? Why bother learning HTML, CSS, and (some chaotic) JavaScript, instead of outsourcing this task to a machine? Together with students of the course ā€œHandmade Websites as (Punk) Zinesā€ at Bauhaus University Weimar we explored Archives from Below: zines and underground publications – drawing inspiration from their nonchalance and their urgent, dynamic design and outlined a conceptual bridge from their mode of working and resistance of uniformity to handmade websites. The students later on wrote and coded their own thematic webzines based on their research in the archives. Thanks to the students and their amazing dedication and work šŸ¤ Places we visited during our excursion to Berlin: Trust Archiv der Jugendkulturen e.V Spinnboden Lesbenarchiv und Bibliothek Berlin e.V. With a background in fine arts and design, her practice examines the evolution of emotional expression online–from early blogging cultures to the commodified authenticity of the algorithm’s social spheres. Florian āˆž Emden are an artist and design duo. The two share a collaborative writing practice, they teach, and design together. Their practice is based around moments of collaboration. They currently live, love, work, and laugh between Berlin and Copenhagen. Lila Steinkampf draws out jelly cakes as objects of desire that prelude a sensual dessert experience. She works with jelly as a temporary sculptural medium that can be consumed while infusing a pure sensual experience, swinging between the art of sweets and the pleasure they give. Hjƶrdis Lyn Behncken is the other half of Notes on studio and will give a lecture on her research on the Lesbian Zine ā€œPelze Pressā€. Louis Hay (*1996) is an artist and filmmaker. Combining vocabularies from cinema and fine arts, his work explores the representation of subjectivity and its relation to the production of meaning.

At the beginning of this year, we collaborated with the fashion students of @udkfashion on a reader that accompanied their semester project presentation, ā€œDas Ding istā€ by @stephaniepenkov and @alexandraboerner . What would have been an external exhibition turned into a presentation within the school building due to budget cuts. Together, in a workshop setting, we developed a scenario of a quasi-fictional exhibition woven into the setup of the project presentation. Through tools such as ekphrasis and concrete typography we encouraged the students to reflect on how to position their works within a space, and to describe—in words—what it feels like to enter that space and encounter the work, as if the exhibition really had happened. Using the material they provided, we designed a reader: printed, scanned, and reprinted—an object within an object, echoing the seminar’s theme and shaped by the constraint of the schools hallway printer that we were thrown back to given the circumstances. Each student then created a unique cover for their publication, sourced from the scraps of fabric and materials of their collection, which accompanied their presentation. Participating students: Rosalie Bock, Sophie Brattinga, Karl Gebhardt, Marina Kolushova, Fiona Gohrke, Kilian Falb, Jing Ling

Common Goods is a digital archive that originated from the ā€œHfK Bootleg Libraryā€ seminar. The archive is a collective space—by students, for students collecting final theses, projects, experiments, and resources to make them accessible and visible. The goal was to create a space for inspiration, overview, and exchange. A place to discover how diverse artistic and creative work at HfK can be – and what goes on behind the closed doors. Using a mini Wi-Fi chip, the students have created a digital library that is both abstract and physically anchored at Speicher XI. The Library Portal makes the collection accessible locally and connects digital content with a real place. Thank you to the students for the dedication and effort creating this amazing and important work <3 And thanks to @umamalina for a great input about her bachelor-project the digital archive of the Archive of Independent Publishing as part of our course @hfkbremen

Publication for the exhibition SPLITTER by Leyla Yenirce in the historic monastery church of Kunstmuseum Magdeburg. Her work unfolds an interplay of image and sound, light and shadow, visibility and concealment through large-format video and room-filling sounds. The publication reflects the spatial experience of the show and how contemporary art and historical architecture, showing and hiding, image and sound interact. Each second of the video is represented by a column in the book, forming the axis in relation to sound volume. Photographs follow the timeline from different perspectives – walking around the church becomes a visual experience. The louder the sound, the smaller the images. Cover and page numbers were created as Frottages of the church walls to capture the space’s texture and the resonance of the sound. Thanks to Benedikt Seerieder @scxeeryder for the invite (curator/editor), Stefan Stark (photos), @bruno_jacoby_official (font: Honey ā¤ļø), @paulzech.img (screenprint support) Print: @druckhaussportflieger @kunstmuseum_magdeburg
