Long before automobiles took to the road, racing in Japan first found its modern form through horse racing. Introduced in the mid-19th century, organized competition established an early appreciation for speed, discipline, and performance. As Japan industrialized in the 20th century, this racing mindset carried naturally into motorsport, where cars joined horses as invigorating public displays of control and endurance. From the postwar period onward, motorsport continued to grow as a proving ground for engineering and technique, shaping a culture that valued precision over excess and consistency over spectacle. Streets races and Circuits emerged across the country, anchoring racing as both a technical pursuit and a deeply rooted part of everyday culture. At Tsukuba Circuit, one of Japan’s most iconic racing venues, that philosophy is on full display. Located in Ibaraki Prefecture, the compact track has been a testing ground for professional teams, grassroots racers, and tuning culture alike since its opening in 1970. Known for its tight layout and technical corners, Tsukuba rewards precision and consistency, making it a favorite for time attacks and benchmark runs. From factory-backed machines to meticulously tuned street cars, the circuit functions as both laboratory and open stage where drivers, engineers, and enthusiasts push boundaries in pursuit of perfect balance.
自動車が普及する以前から、日本における近代的なレースの形は、まず競馬によって築かれました。19世紀半ばに導入された組織的なレースは、スピード、規律、そしてパフォーマンスに対する日本独自の感性を育みました。20世紀に入り工業化が進むと、レースに対する情熱は自然な形でモータースポーツへと引き継がれ、馬に代わって自動車が、制御と忍耐を象徴する力強い存在として、大衆の注目を集めるようになりました。戦後、モータースポーツは技術と技能を試す場として成長を続け、過剰さよりも精密さを、派手な演出よりも一貫性を重んじる文化が形成されていきました。やがて全国各地にストリートレースの舞台やサーキットが登場し、レースは技術の追求であると同時に、日本の日常文化に深く根ざしたものとなっていきました。その哲学が色濃く反映されているのが、日本を代表するサーキットの一つ、筑波サーキットです。茨城県に位置するこのコンパクトなコースは、1970年のオープン以来、プロチームから草の根のレーサー、そしてチューニング文化に至るまで、あらゆる層のテストフィールドとなってきました。タイトなレイアウトとテクニカルなコーナーで知られる筑波は、精密なコントロールと安定した走りが要求されるため、タイムアタックやベンチマーク走行の聖地となっています。メーカーが威信をかけたマシンから、細部まで磨き上げられたストリートカーまで、このサーキットはドライバー、エンジニア、そして愛好家たちが完璧なバランスを求めて限界に挑む研究所であり、かつ最高の舞台でもあるのです。
