I talk about this a lot and for good reason. The older you get, the harder your body has to work to turn protein into something useful. Researchers call it anabolic resistance. The threshold your body needs to trigger muscle repair gets higher, and eating more protein alone does not always solve it. What makes EAAs different is that they arrive in free form. If coffee sometimes makes you jittery instead of focused, there are a few things worth knowing. Caffeine does not affect everyone the same way. How your body processes it, what you have eaten beforehand, and what you combine it with all play a role in the response you get. The jitter response in particular is often less about caffeine itself and more about the conditions around it. Two adjustments I have found make a noticeable difference. Having a small amount of protein before coffee, something as simple as a boiled egg, tends to smooth out the response considerably. A very small pinch of salt in the coffee can also help stabilise it. The combination I have kept consistent for years is coffee with L-theanine. L-theanine is an amino acid found in tea that promotes a calm, focused state without sedation. A 2025 meta-analysis published in Nutrition Reviews found that combining L-theanine with caffeine significantly reduced jitteriness compared to caffeine alone, while preserving the alertness. Protein bars are worth looking at more carefully than the label suggests. Protein is the structural material your body uses to repair almost everything, from muscle and connective tissue to enzymes, hormones, and immune function. It becomes more important with age, and the research behind it is solid. So it moved into the mainstream, and the food industry followed with products like Snickers Protein and Mars Protein. You can drink three liters of water a day and still be dehydrated at the cellular level. Plain water without electrolytes dilutes your sodium and flushes out essential minerals. The water passes through your system without actually entering your cells. That is why you can feel tired, bloated, or foggy even when you think you are drinking enough. Hydration is about absorption, not volume. Sodium, potassium, and magnesium create the gradient that allows water to move into cells. Without those minerals, the water is not retained where it is needed. The type of water you drink plays into this as well. Table water is usually filtered and stripped of its natural minerals, so you are starting from zero. Mineral water contains naturally occurring sodium, magnesium, calcium, and bicarbonates that already support absorption. Worth checking the label, since many bottled waters labeled as mineral water actually contain very little. A simple structure works well: 1.
