🗄 #fromthearchives \\ BTS from the time I got to work with @ponceguitars and not only learn about the process of making guitars but I got to film it too 😎🎸 I grew up with my Dad playing guitar all the time and listened to him play the hundreds of songs he composed. He would ask me to sing along sometimes! And I even taught myself how to play and wrote a few songs too 🎶 So you can imagine howI was incredibly excited I was to be connected with Mike and Ponce Guitars. To capture his legacy and be a part of sharing that story was such a cool experience. \\ ⚠️ Volume and explicit language warning on this video 😂 AKA lots of loud ass laughing and some f-bombs lol Check out this video that shows not only how I pitched the storyboard of “Party for One” but also shows how the actual shots came out in comparison to the original storyboard. For more info on “Party for One” and to watch the entire dance film, see my previous post 🥰 This film was pure collaboration at its finest. @miss_ajay with @continuum.sd and I worked together to establish the message and tone we wanted to deliver. After that, we chose the music tracks together. Then we did a brain dump of all our ideas for visuals that could relay the message effectively and how we could marry those visuals with the music tracks. Then I took all of that information and created the storyboard 🙆🏽‍♀️ An important thing I want to mention is obviously if you watch this video, you’ll see I am not an illustrator in any shape or form. And for a while that lack of talent kept me from making my own storyboards for clients. But once I got over that and tried it a couple times, I learned that most clients don’t care about the artistry. They care about being able to see your vision. Even if you use stick figures and google eyes to show it 😅 It’s okay that you’re a bomb ass filmmaker and not also Michelangelo at the same time haha. P.S. \\ I had never produced a dance film, let alone knew it was even a film category until last year when I met my friend @miss_ajay of @continuum.sd and @soultrysisters . And I was surprised to learn she had never been in a dance film herself! Ajay is a dancer, artist, actress, singer, creator. We already had the intentions of finding a way to collaborate in the future but wanted to build on our friendship first 💜 Then shortly after @baredanceco and @gothamdancetheatre dropped CO:VID, a 48 hour collaborative video experiment that allowed us to work together on our very first dance film! 🙆🏽‍♀️ CO:VID brought together socially distanced pairs of dancers and editors to compete by producing short dance films in 48 hours. We were one of the 13 pairs chosen to participate in this competition and the 13 films were then showcased during an online, virtual show. For the challenge, we weren’t allowed to be in the same room as each other 😱 and had 3 visual + 3 frame requirements that were not revealed to us until the top of the 48 hours. Because of the short time frame and us living about an hour away from each other, we decided to not do an equipment swap with my “fancy” camera and have Ajay film the entire thing on her iPhone 📲 We wanted to devote more time into developing a strong story and concept that would keep people engaged till the end. I’m always so pleasantly surprised with how this little mirrorless camera has performed for me over the last couple of years 😊 In an industry where the best of the best equipment becomes obsolete month after month, it’s easy to think “Oh shit my equipment sucks now. I gotta drop tons of money on the next best thing.” 🤑 But a piece of advice was given to me early on from fellow filmmakers and videographers, “It’s not about your equipment. It’s about how you use it.” It’s about sharpening your craft, learning more about the technical aspects of your current equipment and how to make the most of what you got! And honestly, just making more stuff! I gotta be honest with you. It’s really weird and uncomfortable for me to put myself out there. For me to connect my face with my brand. It’s ironic really. For someone who has a past in acting and had dreams of becoming an entertainer, I hide behind my camera an awful lot. And it’s incredibly hypocritical of me to not practice what I preach. I was constantly telling clients I worked with that putting their face and their story out there can only benefit them and their business. Yet here I was, actively not being the face of my own brand. When I would open up to people about having insecurities and confidence issues, I would always get the same reactions. “What?! 😱 No way! But you look so sure. You seem to have it all together.” I cannot stress this enough…I HAD NO CLUE WHAT I WAS DOING MOST OF THE TIME haha. I figure a lot out on the way. Through trial and error. Through failures and more failures. But the thing is I keep trying and in turn I keep evolving. I always try to work with what I got and you know what? I’m always able to deliver. My theme for 2021 is “level up.” I’m excited for the goals I have and the growth I will experience this year. I’m also working on accepting the failures I will undoubtedly experience as well. Can’t have a high without the lows.
