In Reunion Island, you’ll see Saint Expédit everywhere in many forms and locations.
It’s a small roadside altar dedicated to a saint people turn to when they need something fast.
They’re really common, and most often by the roadside or at crossroads.
People from all and religious communities stop there to pray, mainly for urgent matters.
Requests are traditionally made with offerings, and If a wish is not fulfilled, the statue may be cut or damaged.
If fulfilled, devotees are expected to return and give thanks, often by visiting specific churches on the island.
I’ve driven past them my whole life and never really understood what they were, until now.
