100 Candleholders draws inspiration from JB’s 1981 exhibition 100 Plates Plus, where he playfully expanded a prolific form. Here, each artist brings a distinct approach to material, process, and the interplay between aesthetics and function. 100 Candleholders is on view at Blunk Space through March 28.

"Acacia Melanoxylon, a sturdy tree found along the coast of Marin, is close in spirit and biological behavior to our internal melatonin rhythm. Let these three sleepy sisters bring dreamy low light into the evening, materializing melatonin for a restorative repose."

"I carved the candlestick from a raw piece of wood with carving tools and knives. By not turning the form on a lathe, or laying out rigid symmetrical outlines, I allowed a subtle asymmetry to take shape. I wanted the piece to be reminiscent of a classical form, while also embracing an organic, whimsical free-ness."
