Summer is drawing up its hood so this is a post to tip our sombrero to the kitchen team before we put it back in the attic.
Some wonderful Specials have been concocted alongside our regular menu in the last few weeks under the expert eye of @james_flavell_chef – well done and thanks to him and Ollie, Nico, Luke, Charlie and Rosie.
We’re very proud of where our food is right now; some unique dishes, with an emphasis on things you might not be willing or able to pull off at home. That’s what eating out is all about, right?
In the next couple of weeks we’ll be updating the menu for autumn, so a few other dishes to showcase, and then it’s OctoberBest, and then Christmas, and then New Year… Lots to celebrate and enjoy.
What are we doing for OctoberBest this year?
Our lips are sealed… for now.

INVITE | Call me converted.
I went to @no.no_please for lunch recently and was blown away. Just look at this menu:
⭐️ Sydney stack with grilled aubergine, peppers and pickles (can be made vegan)
⭐️ Bang bang bun with grilled chicken and slaw
⭐️ Haddock kedgeree with spiced garlic rice
⭐️ Squash and dip with whipped feta and pickles
⭐️ Salt and pepper ribs, one of Ollie’s inventions
I told Euan I had never had a Bloody Mary before and he fixed that straight away with a splash of @spicedsussex . I don’t know what’s taken me this long, I absolutely loved it. And I do worry that this one has ruined all other Bloody Mary’s for me.
Euan and Mel (siblings and co-owners!) have an events background and you can tell with the care and creativity they put into each meal. I also love that they encourage everyone in the kitchen to experiment, no matter their seniority. Jack and Ollie were a dream team in the kitchen when I was there, the model is clearly working!
What food spot should we try next?
Big table and private hire bookings…
Euan probably equates to 60% of the views on the Instagram videos of a certain celebrity * as he reflects on his life and evaporating career, so we let E have his fun/way to champion our large Group Booking messaging with this very niche frame of reference.
Full venue, half room, long table, separate tables – we’ve had weddings, birthdays, corporate parties, leaving dos... – whatever your reason speak to us if you’re looking for an excuse to get together, and we are prepared to open out of hours (Mondays, Tuesdays, lunchtimes) if that is better for you.
We’ll work with you on price per head (16- 48 people) and set meals.
There you go; something genuinely to look forward to.
DM here or drop a line to [email protected]
*Isn’t Masterchef better these days with two women hosting it?! Can we do the same swap for our Global leaders please?
Note: Euan is NOT starting a Cameo account.

A customer on table 15 (M.L. from Brussels) had a jolly time with us on Sunday night, and described the restaurant “as if Hunter S. Thompson ran Fourth & Church.”
This was of course a double-barrelled compliment:
We love F&C and have long claimed Sam Pryor as one of the best (and often overlooked) chefs in the city.
And we applaud the king of Gonzo journalists – Hunter S. Thompson – for a life well lived (indeed, wasted).
As he said, “Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well-preserved body, but rather a skid in broadside in a cloud of smoke, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming Wow! What a ride”
He died at 67, frankly looked a lot older, and Johnny Depp fired his ashes from a cannon into the Colorado sky.
To celebrate both associations, we are putting on a couple of cocktails the man would not have been offended by were he ever to have staggered down Preston Street.
Remember what else Thompson said: “The truth is never told during nine-to-five hours,” so see you at ours for some fine food and some truth-juice!
Colourful special this weekend (and next)
BBQ mackerel fillet with yellow curry , Thai green sauce, chicken skin, pickled tomato & grape
Pairs superbly with our Alsatian Riesling from Butlers.
And you have an extra chance to enjoy it as we’re open this Bank Holiday Monday from 5pm.
With Children’s Parade (Saturday) Robin Hood Festival (Sunday), St Annes Party and Gig (Sat and Sunday) – we’re here as your little sanctuary from the crowds on Preston Street.
Summer starts…NOW

Let’s do lunch!
We have put our lunch menu through the salad spinner so we can offer new dishes that suit a luncheon, alongside some of our crowd pleasers from the dinner a la carte – like Egg & Soldier, Lamb Nochos and Szechuan pork ribs.
We’re also pouring our superb Bloody Mary’s, our popular marmalade spritz, and our Beetroot smoothie alongside our regular drinks menu.
We’ll be here for you on Preston Street on Saturdays and Sundays – book or walk-ins.
And if you want to box anything and take it to the beach, you’re very welcome.
See you when the sun is past the yardarm. (Wigs optional)

We had a (sort of) visit from Henry Butler after @butlerswinecellar featured in our Reel yesterday.
Amid his ramblings he makes a good point about our new lunch menu – which is available from 1-4pm on Saturdays and 12-3pm on Sundays (and features our take on Kedgeree, and our new Brioche Buns).
Go and visit Henry in his shop, and provided he’s not in Portugal or on the lavatory (which he seems to be whenever we visit) you too can be on the receiving end of his ramblings. The place is a joy!
Speaking of joy - thank you everyone who took the time to watch/like/comment on our video. The response has blown us away, and sent Euan to Churchill Square to buy a shirt that fits.
Here’s a pick of some places that deserve your dollar that you might not know of.
We’ve had some belting experiences at some Brighton haunts recently so we thought why not share the love.
Criteria was simple: independently owned places that have one outlet. One venue. All eggs in one basket (like us). When you’re a business like that, every person that comes in makes a difference. And one-site wonders are often the places offering something totally unique and potentially a bit bonkers.
Of course, there are dozens of others we could have listed (feel free to put some in comments) so maybe we’ll do another vid another time, but with the Bank Holidays upon us, if you’re in Brighton with some folding burning a hole in your pocket, please put these places, alongside us, on your radar.
Your man at street level, signing out.

Bolt out of your stable/house this weekend and join us.
World War III has been put on hold for 2 weeks, so we can enjoy a weekend celebrating speed (not that type).
Saturday is Grand National Day, so we’ll have some themed cocktails on, and some games to play so you might win a free one yourself.
The kitchen have prepared a new beef short rib dish, and a new lychee cheesecake too.
Sunday is the Brighton Marathon, so we’re putting the RUN in brunch with a free Rum Runner cocktail awarded to anyone who comes in to eat after the race (just show your medal).
We’ll also be showcasing our new Bang Bang Bun, and pouring restorative Bloody Marys with the help of @spicedsussex
You can book through Google or our website to be guaranteed a table.
Saturday 1-10pm
Sunday Brunch 12-4pm
Sunday Dinner 5-8pm
For the Grand National: we’ll have £5 on Captain Cody in honour of our friend, Brighton’s best-humoured Land Lord @windmillbrighton

Absolutely stunning selection of new and old favourite dishes from @no.no_please - the special katsu cauliflower was epic with charred pineapple and we loved the hot cross bun bread and butter pudding. Washed down with a smokey negroni from the keg and beautiful service as always.
