Using my ‘college October school holidays’ to have a fab week in Nerja with my best pal @suemartin7491 .
Had a fabulous day in Malaga today, a city we’re getting to know well, I squeezed in a wee bit of photography with my Polaroid SX-70 camera loaded with black and white film for a college module. Wandering around we came across pair of antique brass door knockers in the shape of hands holding apples.
Capturing four pictures, we headed back for an hour of Polaroid ‘lifts’ where the emulsion ‘holding’ the picture’ is separated, using boiling hot and cold water, from the frame and gently caressed onto, in this case, 300gsm watercolour paper. above is a summary of the results. More details to follow.
I worked for Polaroid from 1985 to 2001. Around 25 years ago I was clearing an ex-colleagues desk and saved a SX-70 Sonar OneStep camera from being skipped. It then lay in my own desk until yesterday when it took its first picture in nearly 3 decades, no grumbles, no fuss, just a cracking wee image of @photobyww . As it was emulsion lift day I needed to see how it compared with my earlier I-Type film lift. Many thanks to @onemarkscott for the SX70 film. Photo story below:
1. Film box
2. @photobyww - Cameras first photo made in 3 decades
3. Image and camera
4. Emulsion lift in a cup (eventually). The I-Type lift was pretty fast with almost all layers coming apart as soon as the image was trimmed. This SX-70 lift was a much, much slower and more patient process requiring two baths of boiling water to gently tease the emulsion away from the adhesive.
5. Camera and emulsion lift. It’s just a pity the Kodak T-shirt is showing reversed. A leaning for next time.
6. Hanging up to dry at the end of a brilliant emulsion lift morning.

It’s Wednesday of week 2 of HND Photography and for us in year 2 that means Alternative Processes. Last week we had a Polaroid emulsion lift demo and this week it was time to do it for ourselves. After gathering hot and cold water baths, scissors, fine paint brushes and thick watercolour paper (300gms is best), I then made a Polaroid Type-I image of an iPhone photo using a Polaroid Lab camera. After 15 minutes developing I trimmed off all of the white frame, peeled off the perspex cover and submerged the image in the hot water bath. Photos as described below:
1. Original image from iPhone (Intentional Camera Movement shot with light trails)
2. Polaroid Lab image trimmed and with perspex removed
3. Photo submerged in water bath
4. Emulsion image on thick paper next to original backing (We noted it’s now bigger than the backing sheet)
5. Emulsion lift alongside backing sheet negative.

Delighted that my image of Cathkin Park, Glasgow was shortlisted in the top 12 entries in the Ilford Photo International Student 2026 competition. Many thanks to @onemarkscott for encouraging me to enter👏🏻👏🏻
Another alternative process tried earlier this week. A solarised dark room print of Gorbals high flats taken from Glasgow Green. The print is still wet from the water bath and a little too bright in the lower half due to the studio lighting above.

Week 1 of second year HND Photography @gkcphotography completed with an Alternative Processes class and demo of a Polaroid emulsion lift by @instantcaitlin supported by lecturer @onemarkscott . We’ve an exciting 12 weeks ahead of us deep diving into the creativity of this photography genre.
The Photojournalism and Fashion modules also kicked off this week so it’s time to ‘lock in’ 👊🏻💪🏻.

I came upon this comment on Threads:
“The best photographers aren’t the ones with the most expensive gear.
They’re the ones who can tell a story with a single frame, even if it’s shot on a phone.
Drop your storytelling photo below 👇”
So I thought “why not?”
Hi all,
I’ve just completed my Advanced Photography Course at Glasgow Clyde College and there is an end of year pop-up student exhibition at Langside College this Saturday, 22nd June from 1:30 to 3:30pm only.
The event is open to all so feel free to come along and see what this year’s students have created.
