The Thames has a highly engineered tidal management system with continuous, hard seawalls lining both banks. But natural salt marsh and sedges break through the cracks. Also dropped into iconic adaptive reuse Powerhouses at Battersea and the Tate, different type of resilience

UK, Portsmouth. Southsea Coastal Defence Scheme is a $185M£ upgrade project to protect Portsmouth from sea level rise. Full promenade, cycle way, terraced planting up raised from the beach level. Great urban design championed and delivered by @ldadesign @royalhaskoningdhv

Galicia, Spain facing directly onto the open Atlantic Coast. Both models of coastal protection at play; hard defences in A Coruna and performance landscape in Porto Do Son. Where the coastal protection is collapsed into a sea wall both precincts leveraged this as to deliver high public amenity including cycle way, promenade, underground parking and planted buffer zones #coastalresilience #coastalinfratructure #martenbequest

As an east coast low hit NSW last week, I began my NYC leg of my travel researching coastal resilience design abroad. A great opportunity to see the work being done in the US and connect with @scape_studio , @econcrete_ and the @billionoyster Project, all advancing different aspects of coastal protection work. Continuing on to EU/UK next comparing diverging coastal design approaches; protection vs performance. #coastalarchitecture #resilience #urbanplanninv #martenbequest

Another difficult goodbye, this time to Josh’s wonderful Dad. After 92 amazing years we said a hard farewell. Josh took beautiful care of Viktor in the last few months and days. Viktor moved from Austria in the 50’s and had a penchant for vintage cars and sailing. I loved the twinkle in his eye and hands that could fix anything. Every rainbow will remind us of you. Ruhe in Frieden, du wirst so sehr geliebt.

#2 My @__ifad__ Highlights 2025 The coastline is always moving, it’s not a static environment, it’s dynamic and changing. Its location changes over geological time, and now in response to a changing climate. We need to be flexible in our relationship with the structures we place along it, to allow it to continue to change. The coastline is an ecosystem we need to support and nurture, rather than try to control. Thanks for your inspiring insights @nlarkin_design and for your continuing work into ocean pools, sea level rise and coastline architecture.

Sad to farewell our beautiful Nan Shirely this week. Born in 1929 in Dungog NSW, she was a firebrand. She moved to Sydney young and billeted with a family to work as a seamstress. She married my pop in the 1950’s, a migrant who rode a motorbike and liked to dance. I’m sure it wasn’t always easy. I loved that she would introduce Josh as her husband to care staff and knew how to savour life right down to the bone. Rest easy Nan ❤️x

Lucky to be named alongside @laurencrockettt as a fellow for the Marten Bequest 2025 this year. Thank you to the panel at @creative.australia . I’m really looking forward to starting the work looking at sea level rise and how we locate structures such as sea walls and living foreshores on the coast. As an emerging architect building a practice in coastal design and planning it is an opportunity to grow and consolidate this work further. Thanks to everyone who has supported me and the grant application including @aileen_sage @government.architect.nsw @chrisromerlee and @johns.ralph Image credit @australiaunseen #martenbequest
