A piece of aroid history has officially been recognized. Philodendron ‘Texas Jose Buono’ is now accepted in the Aroid Cultivar Registry.
This charming sport dates back to the 1960s at Green Gate Nursery in Texas. Originally grown as a ground cover by Joe Tocquigny, it wasn’t loved at the time, but Elise Tocquigny recognized its beauty and preserved a few specimens in her personal collection. Today, thanks to dedicated growers like Anthony Garcia and Saji Mathai of @nirvanatropicals along with current steward James Pease @jamesjpease of @limestonetortoise , this cultivar continues to thrive and inspire hybrids around the world.
Documenting cultivars like ‘Texas Jose Buono’ is vital for preserving the history and lineage of aroids. The Aroid Cultivar Registry ensures that growers, collectors, and researchers can trace a plant’s origin, understand its unique characteristics, and safeguard its legacy for future generations.
