Well it's been a little while in the making (original finish date was November!) but it's finally out! Everything about making this film was a real pleasure from delving into archive boxes of Michael Powell's scripts, notes and letters to looking down the lens at THE Thelma Schoonmaker as she shared her memories of MP's impressive breakfast making skills, and finally the thrill of seeing it appear this morning on BFI Player... Lovely to get this through the post this morning - complete with video essay that I was very pleased to have been asked to contribute. The film has been an favourite of mine for years and delving into its symbolism for the essay just deepened my appreciation for what a masterclass in tension, psychology and just good old filmmaking it is. Also it’s a stunning looking film - if you can’t see it in 35mm then Blu Ray is the next best thing. Let me know what you think of the essay if you have a chance to watch it!

Very pleased to say the new release of Ghost Stories for Christmas Vol 2 is out and I’m honoured to have been able to contribute a video essay to it. As a devotee of M.R. James, it’s hard to express what these films mean to me and how many hours I’ve spent watching them over and over through the years so to have something included on the official release is a bit of a dream come true. The inventiveness, the technical craft and the chilling, creeping mood that the exceptional direction evokes make them utterly timeless and a masterclass in adapting ghost stories. I highly recommend picking up a copy for some old fashioned Christmas viewing. And let me know what you think of the essay if you have 17mins to spare!
(3rd slide is my attempt to recreate some of that spookiness for the title sequence - lit entirely by candlelight! If only Kubrick had had a C70, Barry Lyndon would have been a breeze…)

Derelict bridge + abandoned shopping trolley = Art!
First rolls put through the Fuji GW690II and went back to my favourite spot in Woolwich. Had been worried that the redevelopment works had blocked off the public access to the beach but it was open again and especially glad to see the old pier still there. Definitely want to go back and spend more time there with this camera. 6x9 negatives really are fantastic :)
