The Lineage. An exploration of the blurred lines between immigrant and citizen in the world of Montserratian and British Heritage. As a British Colony, Montserratians carry the title of ‘British Citizen’, but the weight of that title is never truly felt until present in Britain. This portrayal follows the story of Montserratian women, simultaneously paving their way and reinventing their lives, yet staying steadfast in their core values and cultural roots. Connected by their lineage, they are educated in the school of life and purpose, despite any hardships in their environment; they know that there is opportunity wherever they seek it. They confidently move towards the greatness of the future generations, trusting that their humble beginnings are just the start of a greater victory. This project uplifts all the Montserratians who have seeked refuge away from home following the eruption of the Soufrière Hills, in which we celebrate the 30th anniversary of in this year of 2025. NIKKI Susan’s first British baby, born in London, UK 1998. When she came into the world, her Nana told her “You’re the British one, you’ll come and visit me.” Nichaela went to school and liked to talk about herself and her family. She was often faced with her fellow White peers always asking if she was Jamaican, but she was bold and steadfast in correcting them; telling them that she was from Montserrat. The tiny Caribbean island that clearly hadn’t entered the conversation yet in the UK. Growing up immersed in Montserrat culture by her mother taking her to church with other Montserratians in Tottenham or Dalston. Nichaela was also not shy to Montserratian food, growing up eating corn-beef patties for breakfast and seeking out Goat water at every funeral reception. As a performer, she fully embraced her heritage representing Montserrat in Miss Caribbean UK 2023 pageant. Peeling back the layers of her Black British Identity, to recognise herself confidently as a proud Montserratian woman.
