Scent is difficult to capture in words, or so the received wisdom goes. But smells are more than just how they smell. They have a social life – many lives – that can be captured and shared in reflections, lists, diaries. In ‘Reports from the Nose’ they become biography, lens and anchor: a vernacular of sense and experience particular to Emma Aars, but also a prompt for the reader to reflect on their own reports from the nose.

Emma’s scent diary tells stories of desire and fantasy and obsession. She writes about the smells she loves, from CDG’s Marseille to mango vapes to salty seas, and just as often considers notes of repulsion. Musing and lush, spicy and sweet, her writing condenses the daily and the imaginary into a heady musk of sensation.

Emma and the green TURN scarf, in her words.
Every TURN look starts with a story. Emma made our green scarf live in a world where it replaces another missed piece, demanding attention, getting caught in car doors and serving as a companion in a city she doesn’t love.
to share a bathroom - a piece i wrote for @cose.journal about anne and i spending a month together in rome last spring. toothbrushes kissing, dead skin cells eventually turning into a dusty sparkle in the air, peeing with the door open.
