( @claneilfoundation 💚) "Community Fund grantee partner @ngtrust is celebrating adding six permanently preserved community gardens to its portfolio. This brings the total to 61 protected community gardens across Philadelphia. By working with neighbors and community members, and through generous support from the Philadelphia City Council, NGT was able to acquire the gardens from the #philadelphialandbank. The new gardens include: · 15th Street Garden in Point Breeze; · Pemberton Sitting Garden; · Chester Ave Garden in the Kingsessing section of Southwest Philadelphia; · Holly Street Neighbors Community Garden; · Cleveland Street Garden, which began in 2020 during the COVID pandemic; and · Miracle on Oakford Street Garden.".

Happy Earth Day! This is Summer Winter Garden! At more than 50 years old, it’s one of Philly’s oldest community gardens. Until last year, it was at risk of being developed because it wasn’t owned by the people who take care of it. But recently, the Law Center and pro bono counsel at Saul Ewing helped our clients at Neighborhood Gardens Trust gain ownership so it could be permanently preserved for the community to steward for years and generations to come!

We are deeply grateful to you—the gardeners, supporters, and partners who make it possible for NGT to protect and nurture a growing network of community gardens and green spaces across Philadelphia. Thanks to your dedication, we are gaining momentum in securing more cherished spaces, ensuring they remain vibrant hubs of nourishment, learning, and connection for generations to come.   As the growing season comes to a close, we are reflecting on all we have accomplished together this year and the impact felt across our city—bountiful harvests shared, celebrations held, workdays completed, cultural gatherings hosted, wellness programs offered, and urban landscapes restored. Your commitment is invaluable, and we look forward to continuing this work in partnership with you in the months and years ahead.

Today, I transferred the land that houses the Viola Street Garden and @farmonflorence to @ngtrust , permanently safeguarding these beloved community spaces. Community gardens make our neighborhoods cleaner, more beautiful, healthier, and safer. My legislative action ensures these spaces will remain for generations to come.

What a pleasure to spend time today in the Summer Winter Community Garden — which will be preserved forever thanks to legislation I introduced! Community gardens and urban farms reduce crime, improve mental and physical health, build community, give neighbors access to affordable and nutritious produce, and so much more. I will keep working to protect these spaces so the community can benefit from them for generations to come! Many thanks to @ngtrust for stepping up to steward Summer Winter and several other gardens across the city. I also thank @drexeluniv for investing in this garden over the years!

DYK: Glenwood Green Acres is one of the largest and oldest urban farms in Philadelphia? 🍅 On our first episode of this season of our “Gritty & Green” podcast, host and Master Gardener Meredith Nutting chats with gardener Darlene Marcus about Glenwood Green Acres. With over 75 gardeners growing food on the 4 acres in any given year this community garden was founded in the early 1980s on a lot left empty after the whiskey barrel factory burnt down. Tired of seeing their neighborhood used as a dumping ground, James Taylor and a handful of neighbors worked to clean it up and start the garden. In 1996 the garden was formally protected by the @ngtrust .💚 Now plots have passed down through generations of new gardeners like president Darlene Marcus, whose grandfather was one of the first gardeners at Glenwood. She’s joined by VP Louis Tillery and Treasurer Viery Ricketts-Thomas to share the garden’s history and gardeners new and old share its present. There’s even a surprise appearance from @sensharifstreet and the president of the @phsgardening , Matt Rader. Comment ACRE and we will send you the link to the episode.
