This post is presented by @lovedearflor , a Filipino American–owned small business. Click the link in bio for 40% off sitewide! Banana ketchup is so common in Filipino food now that it’s easy to forget it came out of a specific moment in history. María Orosa spent years studying ways the Philippines could rely less on imported food, long before World War II disrupted supply chains across the country. Her banana-based ketchup became more widely used during the war, when tomatoes became harder to access, but it was only one part of her larger food preservation work during the Japanese occupation. Orosa later died during the Battle of Manila in 1945. Decades later, banana ketchup remains part of everyday Filipino cooking, while newer Filipino American brands like @badforbusinessny continue finding new ways to reinterpret it.

Before Romeo Must Die, @jetli was already a huge action star across Asia. But in a new interview, he shared that filming in Hollywood was still a learning experience, especially working in English for the first time as a lead actor. Li said @aaliyah helped him rehearse scenes while they worked on the movie together. He also remembered hanging out after filming with her, her mother and his brother nearby, saying the whole set felt “very warm.” Released in 2000, Romeo Must Die became Aaliyah’s first movie role. She also recorded “Try Again” for the soundtrack, which later became her first No. 1 song on the Billboard Hot 100. Aaliyah died the following year in a plane crash at age 22. More than 20 years later, Li says she is still “always in my heart.” 🤳Click our Link in Bio to sign up for our newsletter. 📰Follow us for the latest Asian News @NextShark

Orion Choco Pie has been sold in Vietnam for decades. The snack became especially associated with Tet, where it’s commonly included in holiday gift boxes across the country. Now it’s going viral for a different reason. Nguyen Tuan Anh, a 19-year-old student in Hanoi, survived 37 hours lost on Tam Dao Mountain after getting separated from his hiking group during heavy fog. Local reports said he sheltered beside a stream in a rocky crevice and survived on Choco Pies he packed for the trip and water from the stream. The Independent later reported rescuers still found four packets left in his backpack when he was found on April 21. After the rescue, Orion Vietnam reportedly visited Nguyen and gave him more boxes of Choco Pies, including strawberry-flavored ones. 🤳Click our Link in Bio to sign up for our newsletter. 📰Follow us for the latest Asian News @NextShark

One part of Huayan’s comments seemed to catch people off guard online: he said he never viewed Counter-Strike as simply a violent game. In translated interview clips, the Chinese Buddhist monk compared it to chess, saying the game relies on concentration, communication and staying calm under pressure. He also reportedly said players cannot succeed by focusing only on themselves. Huayan started playing Counter-Strike while growing up in Shanghai during the early 2000s and continued gaming after entering monastic life. The clips recently spread across Chinese social media, where users debated whether competitive gaming and Buddhist practice could overlap in unexpected ways. Some people agreed with his comments about discipline and cooperation. Others questioned whether a Buddhist monk should be playing a shooting game at all. 🤳Click our Link in Bio to sign up for our newsletter. 📰Follow us for the latest Asian News @NextShark

@manny.s.kang didn’t stop. He walked about 135 miles to London, then ran the London Marathon, covering roughly 156 miles in under three days without sleep. It was his sixth time running the race. Since 2018, he’s been raising money for Dementia UK, bringing in about $450,000 so far to support families dealing with dementia. By the end, he said he felt “a little bit delirious.” In an interview with BBC News, he recalled walking up to a stranger holding an ice cream and taking it without really thinking. 🤳Click our Link in Bio to sign up for our newsletter. 📰Follow us for the latest Asian News @NextShark

South Korea’s largest Buddhist sect welcomed a new kind of monk this week: a humanoid robot named “Gabi.” The four-foot-tall robot participated in a Buddhist initiation ceremony at a temple in Seoul, where it pledged vows including respecting life, listening to humans, treating other robots peacefully and saving energy. Developed by Chinese robotics company Unitree Robotics, Gabi also took part in a modified purification ritual and is expected to join upcoming Buddha’s birthday lantern festival celebrations as Buddhist leaders explore integrating AI into religious practice. 📽️Edited by: Gabe Jung 🤳Click our linkinbio to sign up to our daily newsletter. 📰Follow us for the latest Asian News @NextShark #news #reel #southkorea #buddhism #robot #ai #artificialintelligence #robotics #gabi #monk #buddhist #seoul #technology #futuretech #humanoid #unitreerobotics #lanternfestival #buddha #innovation #automation #koreannews #asiannews #religion #technews #robotmonk #viralnews #science #future #culture #humanity

BTS drew an estimated 50,000 fans to Mexico City’s Zócalo square after meeting Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum at the National Palace ahead of their “Arirang” world tour concerts. The group greeted fans from the palace balcony as Sheinbaum praised BTS for spreading messages of “friendship, peace, and love.” The sold-out Mexico City shows are expected to generate around $107.5 million in economic impact, according to BigHit Music. Sheinbaum previously called BTS’ concerts in Mexico a “historic event” and even requested more shows in the country earlier this year. 📽️Edited by: Gabe Jung 🤳Click our linkinbio to sign up to our daily newsletter. 📰Follow us for the latest Asian News @NextShark #news #reel #bts #bangtan #army #mexico #mexicocity #claudiasheinbaum #kpop #arirang #worldtour #concert #zocalo #nationalpalace #southkorea #koreanmusic #rm #jin #suga #jhope #jimin #v #jungkook #bighitmusic #soldout #fanmeeting #livemusic #asiannews #kpopnews #musicnews

Back in 2017, @bts.bighitofficial was already drawing huge crowds in Mexico City. Nearly a decade later, around 50,000 fans gathered at the Zócalo just to watch the group appear from a balcony for a few minutes. BTS first performed in Mexico in 2014, when K-pop was still far from the mainstream in most parts of the world. Since their last major shows there in 2017, K-pop streaming in Mexico has reportedly grown more than 500%. The group later returned to Mexico City for three sold-out stadium concerts, with reports saying more than 1 million fans attempted to buy tickets online. For a lot of longtime fans, seeing the Zócalo covered in purple light sticks showed just how much BTS — and K-pop in Mexico — has grown over the years. 🤳Click our Link in Bio to sign up for our newsletter. 📰Follow us for the latest Asian News @NextShark
