Here at AusCos Hub we definitely kicked off 2026 at full throttle by taking part in the first inaugural @newy.con event as part of the @newcastleshow a few weeks ago!
This exciting new event marked a new chapter for the Hunter region and regional cosplay events alike, the event delivered an awesome pop-up experience for all those who attended and we’ve written up an event highlight showcasing some of the action from across the weekend!
We’d like to say thank you to Simon from @heroesandmore for having us play a small part in this event and we can’t wait to see what next year holds!
@gabreechan loved meeting everyone who came and said hi at the AusCos Hub booth and a special shoutout to @ma.dee.jpg and @jenniwrenncos for helping out as extra hands on the Sunday - you guys reinforced what cosplay is all about which is community and making friends!

I had the pleasure of representing @auscos_hub at @newy.con as part of the #NewcastleShow2026, it was an incredible honour to show up for the community and meet all of the wonderful people across the weekend. It’s very clear that the Hunter has a huge demand for pop-culture and cosplay and the community is passionate, uplifting and so supportive.
Seeing the effort and creativity that went into everyone’s cosplays was inspiring and meeting many younger aspiring cosplayers who are just starting on their own cosplay journey was a great experience to be a part of. Congratulations to everyone who showed up, took part in the competition and supported each other over the weekend! 👏
All of the panels, talks and sessions across the weekend were fun, unique and insightful and it was great to see so many groups showing up for the Hunter to showcase pop-culture and share their passion and excitement for the things we all love and enjoy.
My only regret from the weekend? Not taking more photos/selfies with some of the people I meet over the weekend! 📷😂

We had such a fun weekend. Putting together an inaugural event is a massive effort, and you all did an amazing job. A major highlight for us was meeting and chatting with so many awesome people!

Wow! What a big day today at the #newcastleshow2026 and the first ever Newcastle Cosplay Convention: Newy-Con!
My cosplay today was #kida from #atlantisthelostempire
It was such an honour to not only be a part of the newest Cosplay Convention @newy.con right in my home town, but to win the #cosplaycompetition for the first time ever since I began officially cosplaying - what an amazing moment!
I am still reeling!
Thank you so much to all the judges declaring me the winner of today! Congratulations to all of the other winners and well done to all of the other competitors who came today! All of you did such a great job and I always look forward to seeing everyone's amazing builds!
I also think the audience was fascinated to learn that Kida is technically a disneyprincess but because the movie didn't perform well ($$$), that she is not one of the 'official' princesses.
This cosplay was a unique one for me, as I wanted to not only make a cosplay of a character I love, but a cosplay that is easy to get into and out of and as a 'go-to cosplay' for future events whilst still recovering from medical event in December.
The skirt itself was the biggest challenge, as I had no pattern to work with and utilised character images from the movie, drew inspiration from other cosplayers and created my own pattern for the skirt. I used inexpensive fabrics and trim to show that cosplay does not need to be expensive to be great!
The wig was crimped, cut and styled by myself.
The earring, necklace, top and bottom undergarments were purchased. The top was altered to fit my sizing/shape.
I have so many adjustments and things to polish off on this skirt, and I plan to make it in a stretcher material for next time. I also plan to make the top and undergarments myself in the future, and add some more features for the wig.
I am looking forward to the next Newy-Con and cannot wait to see it explode to be bigger, better and make a huge mark in cosplay events of Australia!
@newy.con today was amazing, the effort people go into with their cosplay is second to none. I have plenty of images to share from the day so keep an eye out.
