yesterday I lived my literal dream and recorded at new monkey studio (the studio elliott smith built in LA before he passed). to think that throwing ass online to melancholic music and making cursed renditions to elliott smith got me here is pretty crazy tbh. 6 months ago is when I posted my first silly niche video that resonated with so many ppl somehow. 6 months before that i was still in art college in a program I no longer wanted to be in just trying to graduate, pretty depressed and dealing with intense autistic burnout to where i wondered when the time would come that I actually got to focus on my music fully and integrate myself into the Toronto music scene. I would tell myself optimistic thoughts and be delusional about how I would get to visit this space and one day I would get to maybe visit the figure 8 wall. after months of posting and âgoing nowhereâ i was told by my partner to post more of my personality online and ran with it. without that nudge i wouldnât have gotten here i donât think. got a new song coming out on march 20th and the one i recorded at new monkey soon after TBA with a music video by a really awesome person. also got another surprise announcement soon about a certain rendition coming out to streaming platforms with a music video too by the same guy :,D thanks so much for inviting me @newmonkeystudio this is really off brand for me đ¤§đŤâ¤ď¸â¨

We first connected with Aaron when he performed at the All My Rowdy Friends Elliott Smith tribute show in Los Angeles hosted by New Monkey Studio @newmonkeystudio in 2024, and we have been hoping to get him on the podcast ever since.
At that event Aaron performed âIndependence Day,â the same song he discusses in this episode. In our conversation he reflects on the track, Elliottâs songwriting, and what makes the song so powerful to revisit and perform.
