In dense urban settings, the rear lane is often relegated to utility. At Darlinghurst House, the architecture celebrates it.⠀ ⠀ This view from the kitchen intentionally frames the lane's textured brickwork and raw character, creating a curated backdrop that anchors the home in its specific context. The deep sill transforms the threshold from a simple window into a living edge, balancing the grit of the alley with the refined warmth of the interior. #buildingbetter⠀ ⠀ Architecture: @anthonygill36 ⠀ Photography: @arorygardiner ⠀⠀ Build: @newmarkconstructions ⠀ Completion: 2025⠀

In a dense urban context, luxury is defined by the ability to breathe. This bedroom terrace serves as a private aperture, utilising hit-and-miss brickwork to invite airflow and dappled light while maintaining a necessary veil of privacy from the street.⠀ ⠀ By extending stone flooring from the internal threshold out to the edge, the room feels double its size—capturing the "borrowed landscape" of the neighbouring canopy. A quiet, elevated sanctuary in the heart of the city. #buildingbetter⠀ ⠀ Architecture: @anthonygill36 ⠀⠀ Photography: @arorygardiner ⠀⠀ Build: @newmarkconstructions ⠀⠀ Completion: 2025⠀

A corner site terrace lives and breathes through its voids. At Darlinghurst House, the external stair is a key structural element that connects the heart of the home to the roof terrace above.⠀ ⠀ For the Newmark team, this was about the resolution of junctions: the flush integration of the sliding track, the slender profile of the steel balustrading, and the consistent rhythm of the brickwork. It’s about creating a sense of openness in a dense urban environment through high-performance execution #buildingbetter⠀ ⠀ Architecture: @anthonygill36 ⠀⠀ Photography: @arorygardiner ⠀ Build: @newmarkconstructions ⠀ Completion: 2025⠀

Redefining inner-city privacy. This bathroom moves beyond utility, serving as a framed observatory overlooking its own curated, small courtyard.⠀ ⠀ With floor-to-ceiling glazing creating an immediate, immersive connection. Tucked behind the heritage front facade, it’s a moment of retreat that prioritizes soft light and visual volume over mere floor area. #buildingbetter⠀ ⠀ Architecture: @anthonygill36 ⠀⠀ Photography: @arorygardiner ⠀ Build: @newmarkconstructions ⠀⠀ Completion: 2025⠀ ⠀

A dialogue between heavy mass and organic softness. At this junction, the off-form concrete staircase becomes more than just circulation; it’s a sculptural anchor for the home.⠀ ⠀ Executing these crisp, off-form lines alongside the glazing requires absolute site precision. The result is a play of light and shadow that shifts throughout the day, grounded by the lush subtropical planting of the internal courtyard. #buildingbetter⠀ ⠀ Architecture: @anthonygill36 ⠀ Photographer: @arorygardiner ⠀ Builder: @newmarkconstructions ⠀ Complete 2025

Where the heritage facade anchors the corner, the day-to-day narrative unfolds at the lane-way and through this central void.⠀ ⠀ These functional zones as critical thresholds, not utility spaces. The side courtyard, defined by a lush garden, provides a moment of retreat. The structural feat of the suspended window hanging off the internal staircase frames this perspective, creating a moment where the complexity of the build gives a moment of pause. #buildingbetter⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ Architecture: @anthonygill36 ⠀ Photography: @arorygardiner ⠀ Build: @newmarkconstructions ⠀⠀ Completion: 2025⠀ ⠀

While the heritage facade anchors the corner, the true narrative unfolds at the rear lane. This access acts as the primary threshold—transforming the "day-to-day" into a seamless experience of precision-milled junctions and intentional flow. #buildingbetter⠀ ⠀ Architecture: @anthonygill36 ⠀ Photography: @arorygardiner ⠀ Build: @newmarkconstructions ⠀ Completion: 2025

Completed in 2025, this project explores the tension between a heritage terrace shell and the contemporary need for sanctuary. By punctuating the plan with central voids, the design prioritises visual connectivity and a seamless transition between the built form and its micro-climate. Restoring a Bruce Rickard icon on the Northern Beaches comes with its secrets. The biggest challenge? Replicating the original bushhammered concrete finish from 50 years ago. The exact technique had been lost to time, but after plenty of trial and error, and a little bit of ingenuity, we’ve cracked the code. The results are coming out better than we ever expected. #newmark #BruceRickard #NorthernBeachesArchitecture #ConcreteCraft #HeritageRenovation Architect: @bennettmurada PM: @brooklane_

Some construction involvement of a different kind today. One of our girls was part of the opening of the schools new building site with NSW MPs and a #7news crew. She even made the 6pm news. #buildingbetter

Perched high on a cliff, this off-form concrete masterpiece bridges Sydney’s wild north shore landscape, the bays of Middle Harbour, and the garden suburb of Castlecrag. Wrapped in a striking corten steel screen, it sits seemingly weightless yet deeply grounded in its setting. Every angle, every detail — nothing left to chance. A home that is truly one of a kind. Street-facing privacy, bay-facing serenity. The Corten veil provides a sculptural layer of seclusion from the public realm, while the rear opens to uninterrupted views across Sugarloaf Bay where mornings start with coffee and calm #buildingbetter Architecture: @phplus_arch_sydney Engineer: @structure_eng Photographer: @tfadtomferguson Stylist: @tessthyregod
