We are happy to to have our first highlight from our open call, “Terbit Sendiri”, a Self-published artist’s publication from Indonesia curated by Jordan, jordan Édition, to be part of our participation at Focal Point Art Book Fair 2025 by Sharjah Art Foundation (@sharjahart ) Publication highlight #1 Out of Sight, By Nabila Ernada (@nernada ) Out of Sight examines how reproductive autonomy in Indonesia is shaped by visibility, erasure, and media control. Tracing lineage from colonial governance to Suharto’s New Order and today’s digital infrastructures, it explores how gendered surveillance and moral policing persists across pulp, print and algorithmic media. Through feminist counter-archives and hidden networks, the work reveals how resistance endures through invisibility, misdirection, and coded care. Nabila Ernada is a design researcher and media artist based in Rotterdam. Her work explores the intersection of surveillance and resistance, and examines how media infrastructures regulate visibility, legality, and the body—particularly in Indonesia. She works with text, film, and installation, often weaving feminist subversion into sound, archives, and bureaucratic systems. She recently completed her Master’s in Social Design at the Design Academy Eindhoven, where she won the Best Thesis Award for Out of Sight: On Subverting Gendered Surveillance.

Re(tracing) Buruh Siluman extends the research of @buruhsiluman into the colonial afterlife of the Dutch cultivation system, tracing the women coolies whose labour and bodies were never fully their own. During the nyai [kept domesticated woman] era, women on plantations occupied a dual and precarious position: labourer and concubine, worker and property. Palm oil is not often told as a woman’s story. But it has always been. Drawing from found footage and documents held in the KITLV archive, this film installation returns to the first palm oil plantation on Indonesian soil, once extracted under Dutch colonial rule, now privately owned. The ownership changed. The conditions did not. Sexual violence and unfair wages against women labourers persist today, a colonial capitalist inheritance that never declared itself as such. I’d like to thank @dewi.sofiaa for her support in expanding this research during its first iteration at @cbkzuidoost . And for the loving and critical eyes of @rubyvenus and @rizqita.jpg 💠 You can still see the film and smell the work at @mamarotterdam until May 3rd ++++++ sound design by @luthantyo ++++++

“It’s a reminder that they are still lingering amongst all of us.” With Re(tracing) Buruh Siluman, Nabila Ernada @nernada created a haunted monument to ghost workers (Buruh Siluman), paying homage to the invisible women on Indonia’s palm oil who were used for plantation labour. Although structurally erased from the record, their spirits still haunt us, reminding us that capitalist systems continue to exploit women workers today. Our current exhibition shadow circuits highlights works that bring structures forward that connect the unquestioned everyday use of mineral resources and the painfully hidden history of extraction and exploitation behind them. Pick up a copy of our field guide publication to learn more or click on the link in bio to read Nabila’s essay about ghost laborers. shadow circuits is on display through May 3rd.

Tomorrow from 13:00–14:00, @nernada a media artist and researcher based in Rotterdam and Summer Sessions 2024 alumni, will join us on @operator.radio talking about her Summer Sessions project and more! What happens when belief, technology and finance start to operate in the same system? In ‘The susuk ATM’ @nernada imagines a speculative machine that translates Indonesian black magic rituals into digital transactions. The work connects systems that are often seen as opposites, revealing how both mysticism and modern finance rely on ideas of control, debt and submission. By reframing ritual offerings as financial exchanges, the project questions how power operates in systems we consider rational, and what forms of agency remain within them. Tune in tomorrow via @operator.radio Applications for Summer Sessions 2026 are now open.

LECTURE PERFORMANCE & WORKSHOP | POSITIONS: UNEARTHING. Join us on Thursday 12 March for Unearthing, Uprooting! The family tends to be a starting point for many who are curious about tracing their colonial heritage. With the rapid development of technology, genealogies that were once elusive are quickly revealed through a simple search. However, the depth of available information depends on the proximity of one’s own family to the colonial power matrix. This inequity is inherently tied to who profited from the colonial period and its lasting legacies, in Indonesia and beyond. During the Unearthing, Uprooting, invited speakers intend to interrogate the feudal, colonial, and capitalist functions of family in the colonial state, as well as the more recent histories of its instrumentalization as a tool of social control. Stroom Den Haag | 12.03.26 Exhibition: 6.02 - 3.05.2026 | open during regular opening hours. This program is organized in close collaboration with Javanese collective Gegerboyo; cellist, performer and composer Emir Cello and percussionist Sander van Elferen; cultural worker Dewi Sofia; design researcher Nabila Ernada, and visual artist and cultural worker Marie Civikov. A collective dinner / iftar will be served at 18.30, prepared by Sadj. This evening will start off with a lecture performance by Marie Civikov, Dewi Sofia, Nabila Ernada, Emir Cello and Sander van Elferen, and is followed by a workshop by the collective Gegerboyo. Sign up now via the link in our bio, as seats are limited. Unearthing, uprooting is organized as part of the public program of Positions: Unearthing.
