New Year New Program! Swipe for English Precious Trunks ra đời không phải như một lớp học thiết kế, mà như một sự tiếp nối của một văn hoá đã tồn tại rất lâu ở Việt Nam. Văn hoá Nhôm Nhựa, hay Ve Chai, hay Đồng Nát là một hệ thống mà ở đó giá trị không nằm ở hình thức, mà nằm ở khả năng được dùng lại. Một cái chai rỗng, một miếng nhôm cong, một sợi dây điện cháy… với người này là rác, nhưng với người khác là tiền học, là bữa ăn, là một ngày sống tiếp. Khi mình còn nhỏ, mấy cô Ve Chai đi qua không chỉ mang theo cái cân và cái bao. Họ đã mang đến cho mình một cách nhìn thế giới: thứ gì cũng có thể đổi được thành thứ khác. Precious Trunks lớn lên từ cách nhìn đó. Trong hai ngày của workshop, người tham gia không được đưa cho vật liệu mới, đẹp, hay “đúng chuẩn”. Thứ họ có là những gì đã bị bỏ đi, giống hệt những gì mấy cô Ve Chai từng thu gom. Nhiệm vụ của họ không phải là sáng tạo ra cái gì đó hoàn toàn mới, mà là học cách nhìn lại: thứ này còn dùng được không? nó có thể trở thành cái gì khác? nó có đáng được giữ lại không? Thiết kế, ở đây, bắt đầu từ việc chọn chứ không phải từ việc vẽ. Giống như người Ve Chai phải quyết định trong vài giây: món này mua, món kia bỏ. Precious Trunks đặt người làm thiết kế vào cùng một tình thế: giữa hỗn độn, phải học cách nhận ra tiềm năng. Mình tin rằng phần khó nhất của thiết kế không phải là tạo hình, mà là phân loại. Không phải là làm cho đẹp, mà là quyết định thứ gì nên được sống tiếp. Precious Trunks là một vựa Ve Chai tạm thời. Ở đó, người ta không đổi đồ lấy tiền, mà đổi sự chú ý lấy giá trị. Và có lẽ, cũng giống như tuổi thơ của mình, khi bán nhôm nhựa có thể đổi được sách vở, kem, hay đồ chơi, những người tham gia cũng sẽ mang về một thứ khác: một cách nhìn mới về thế giới vật chất quanh họ. Early this year, @mariko_urbannomad @bridgestudio_kyoto and @neutral_colors_magazine invited me to Kyoto for a residency. My last visa to Japan was already a storm, but this time the answer came colder: rejected. A familiar disappointment, yet still a wound. We had done everything. Sometimes borders want more than we can give. So I asked myself: If I cannot cross the sea, can the work cross instead? In a world where mobility is uneven, where some passports float and others sink, creation becomes an act of resistance, a way to stretch beyond the line we’re told not to cross. Mariko and I went “treasure hunting” over the phone, choosing forgotten objects from Bridge Studio. Katoh-san carried them to Saigon in a small suitcase — a fan frame, a box, a plastic curtain… The materials arrived even when I couldn’t. This project begins there: where politics interrupts movement, but imagination refuses to stop. To provide an optimal guided experience, slots are very limited. It’s not waste, it’s potential. Under the guidance of Dương Gia Hiếu, founder of the Sài Gòn-based design studio @nem.space , learn to work with discarded and found objects to create something new. A lamp-making workshop that doesn’t start with a sketch or a concept, but rather begins with an exercise to to fix, reuse and reupholster “trash” into a finished, functional piece. Having conducted community-based activities like PHẲNG in Singapore and The New Comfort Shanghai that both leveraged on found objects, Precious Trunks, too represents the designer and artist’s approach to challenge overconsumption, throwaway culture, and reigniting the full lives that remain for items forgotten. What you’ll leave with is beyond just a piece of lighting, it’s an enlightened view of design, waste and the world. ❕As this is an intimate workshop, we require a registration of interest and confirmation of basic fabrication and tool-handling skills before participation is confirmed. Riso print studios often find themselves wondering what to do with their used ink tubes aind Ném is no exception (even though we are not a riso studio). In the early days of Ném Projects, riso lamp tubes were among our very first material experiments. By combining Ném’s signature materials with the vivid colors of riso ink tubes, the lamp eventually returns everything: wires, bulb, even the shade … back into the tube itself, much like the Phẳng Lamp.
