Research update, because of course you want to know what our researchers are up to!
Interdisciplinary Witch Dr Alice Elizabeth Wilson @neither.both spoke at the International Society of Mythology earlier this month for their 2026 Mythologium. She presented in the 'animals' stream, with the paper 'Refusing enclosure: Feminised human-animal relations and the (continued) power of dangerous intimacy.'
The presentation was based on a piece of archival research that Alice and her treasured co-conspirator, Helen Wadham, also of Manchester Metropolitan University, carried out last year. They looked at English-specific witchcraft court documents, pamphlets, "confessions" etc published between 1560 and 1838.
Key themes and arguments of the presentation included:
- The witch trail archives shows that there is a long, English-native history of multispecies relationships. I.e England has it's own mythopoesis of enchantment; we don't need to look abroad to find a cosmology of multi-being life and relationality.
- The 1500’s was the beginning of making multispecies solidarity illegal in England.
- The witch-familiar relationship, and solidarities between other "classes" of being like men/women, peasants/landowners, human/animal was key place where capitalism and Christian patriarchy got to work in destroying connection, intimacy, and cooperation.
- This is still the case today.

I’ve spent the last two months writing a paper about witchcraft with my wise and brilliant friend Helen who is too smart to have Instagram.
Writing this paper meant a lot of reading Middle English texts from the 1500s including the truly unhinged Daemonologie by your enemy and mine, King James 1st.
To cope with the rampant and insane misogyny of this text, I wrote a stupid satire pice taking the piss out of him because I know he would have hated that 🥰
Today it was published by one of my absolute favourite comedy magazines.
