The Altec Peerless 4722 Transformer is a vintage audio transformer that was originally designed and manufactured by Peerless Electrical Products, a division of Altec Lansing, during the mid-20th century. It was primarily used in professional audio applications, especially in broadcasting and recording studios, to match low impedance microphones to high impedance inputs in tube amplifiers or mixing consoles. Key Features: Impedance Matching: Typically converts 50/150 ohms (input) to 50,000 ohms (output). Audio Quality: Renowned for its high fidelity, detailed sound, and clarity, which has made it a sought-after component among audiophiles and vintage audio enthusiasts. Use in Hi-Fi Systems: In modern high-end hi-fi setups, the Altec Peerless 4722 is often repurposed as a step-up transformer for moving coil (MC) phono cartridges. MC cartridges, known for their low output signal levels, require significant amplification to be compatible with standard phono preamps designed for moving magnet (MM) cartridges. The 4722 transformer effectively boosts the MC signal, providing the necessary gain while preserving the musical detail and tonal characteristics that audiophiles seek. The transformer’s ability to deliver a clean, uncolored signal makes it ideal for this purpose, ensuring that the delicate audio signal from the phono cartridge is faithfully reproduced without introducing noise or distortion. This application leverages the 4722’s vintage design to meet the exacting standards of contemporary high-fidelity audio systems.
