‘Fanfare for St Edmundsbury’ - Benjamin Britten
Nearly a year since we recorded this, we are very excited to share this recording of ‘Fanfare for St Edmundsbury’ recorded on Natural Trumpets (F, C & D) at the @voces8foundation Centre in London!
Britten’s Fanfare for St Edmundsbury was written
in 1959 for a cathedral of the same name in Bury St Edmunds. Though usually performed on modern instruments, the fanfare harks back to the era of natural trumpet playing where, prior to the invention of valved instruments,
trumpets were limited to performing only certain notes in certain keys. The work consists of three distinct
solo lines that, as Britten instructs, are to be played ‘as far apart as possible, even when the fanfare is
played indoors’. In the work’s concluding section these lines are superimposed, creating a kaleidoscope of
overlapping rhythms and harmonies which finally culminates in a rousing chordal flourish.
Thank you again to @ingenalexander for such a great day of recording, and Jonathan Freeman-Atwood at the @royalacademyofmusic for giving us this opportunity with the @voces8foundation !
