On Good Friday in 1727, the St Matthew Passion was performed for the first time in Leipzig. Can you imagine being the first to witness or even perform such sublime music?! James Runcie does exactly this in his masterpiece of a novel The Great Passion. He writes: "The piece was determined to master music's every possibility, to recognise its ability to understand the depths of all our sorrows, to console us through our every desolation, and lift our hearts with unexpected joy."

Did you know that this year marks 100 years since the death of composer Gabriel Fauré? We thought it would be appropriate to mark it with a performance of his beautiful Requiem — and we thought we'd invite you to join us! And not only that — we asked Owain Park, founder and director of The Gesualdo Six to conduct you. What are you waiting for? Sign up to join the Festival Chorus by 31st March! /festival-chorus-2024 🎶 This gorgeous Requiem has earned the affectionate moniker "lullaby of death" owing to its remarkably soothing and tranquil nature. Fauré, influenced by personal grief and his own philosophical outlook, sought to evoke a sense of comfort and serenity in the face of mortality — there's no judgment or fear to be found here. The tender melodies and ethereal harmonies here give both performer and listener a sense of profound peace, akin to being cradled in a comforting embrace...

Did you know that Shakespeare loved music almost as much as he loved literature? Many of the songs in his plays would have been written with music in mind, and he may even have commissioned some of the tunes we know today, including Thomas Morley's setting of that lovely poem, It was a Lover and his Lass.
