Gai Juk & Youtiao
I’ve spent my life trying to move onto the next big thing; university, relentless career development, or setting sights on bigger and better — adopting many new and fun ways of thinking and doing in my continued pursuit of “next.”
While still in pursuit, I’ve realized that what I am diverging from is the very thing that I yearn so deeply for. It’s the foods I crave, the dialects and words that I practice and loosely pull together, or the mannerisms that I try to emulate.
As progress is made, I also want to hold on to and appreciate where I’ve come from. This is equally as important.
Here’s my shameless attempt. Phoning my pops for the recipe, getting his advice, and triple checking with him that everything was done just right.
So, an homage to family, culture, and heritage. This is congee, it’s served with a cruller. It’s enjoyed for breakfast, or on any given sick day. It’s comfort and nourishment.
If you can, please take the time to learn from those before you. It’s a beautiful thing to understand what makes something feel like home, and an even more rewarding thing to play your part in contributing to that feeling.
Being vulnerable for the gram. Who would’ve thought !!!
