Check out today’s mini reviews for three YA novels that you won’t want to miss!
WHAT WE DID TO SURVIVE by Megan Lally
An addictive rollercoaster ride of high stakes, nonstop suspense, and edge-of-your-seat action, What We Did to Survive was the definition of a binge-able read. You see, from the fast pace to the palpable sense of fear, this survival thriller was impossible to put down. That wasn’t all there was to this YA novel, however. After all, on top of the thrills and chills, there was a subtle study of loyalty, redemption, and privilege thanks to the small cast and their truly toxic relationships. Altogether, it was a perfect high-octane mashup of White Lotus, Castaway, and Freida McFadden. Rating of 4.5 stars.
THE BEAST YOU LET IN by Dana Mele
A haunting tale that led more with a creeping sense of unease versus jump scares, The Beast You Let In was an eerie, dark read. With family secrets, a possession, and realistic small-town us vs. them struggles, it had everything I could want in a YA novel. Even better, it dove into LGBTQIA+ themes as well as sisterhood, identity, and trust in a thought-provoking way. Don’t worry, though, this supernatural horror book also delivered plenty of fear. So if you loved The Haunting of Hill House or Sager’s Home Before Dark, grab this one now. The scary movie vibes mixed well with the commentary. Rating of 4 stars.
TWO PERFECT LIES by Natalie D. Richards
Part sky-high tension and part palpable emotion, Two Perfect Lies had me utterly riveted. With complex characters, a relentless pace, and layers of twists, this coming-of-age tale-meets-chilling revenge thriller was an edge-of-your-seat read that I couldn’t put down. You see, with toxic friendships, ultra high stakes, and oodles of high school drama, it was a juicy look at the dark side of being a teen with a murder mystery tale on the side. Suspenseful, clever, and taut, it was like Gossip Girl with a side of Cruel Summer, all of which made it into a one-sitting read. Rating of 4.5 stars.
