One of my favorite commissions so far has been writing art card poems mailed to @miamicityballet subscribers. There are seven poems total, but sharing just one here. 💚🤍
Never, in my wildest dreams, did I ever dream that this girl from a town with one stoplight and no MFA would be taken seriously by The Academy. But I have worked so hard, and I am here. I claim this space humbly and proudly and with so much gratitude to the poets who taught me through their example and their books.
Thank you to my biggest poetry role models Sylvia Plath, Anne Sexton, Emily Dickinson, @dseuss , Maureen Seaton, @wildeamericanboy , @poetrichardblanco , @caridadmoro and @richiehof . Thank you to my mother, Nancy, for reading poems to me from the time I was old enough to hear. Thank you, Universe. 🙏💙
I’m excited to share my first official project as Miami’s Poet Laureate: Songs for America. These sonnets by 7 local poets are a form of music designed to bring people together at a time that often tries to divide. Here’s a sneak peek of my sonnet, with link to all poems in bio. With gratitude to @mayordlc , @poetrichardblanco , @caridadmoro , @jenkaretnick , @thebiscaynepoet , @ran_jun & @trey_rho . ❤️🤍💙
