While the city celebrates the opening of the new David Geffen Galleries, I am still missing this beauty. I took these photos Feb. 24, 2020, before it was demolished.

For those of you who were just introduced to the song “MacArthur Park” by Jimmy Webb after hearing it during Alysa Liu’s Olympic gold–winning performance (wow, just wow!), here’s some history about the park from our We Heart L.A. Parks book, accompanied by an illustration by Miles Castro @partymillz :)
Located in L.A.'s Westlake neighborhood, the park was called Westlake Park when it opened to the public in 1890, before it was renamed for World War II general Douglas MacArthur in 1942. Many Angelenos share distinct memories of time spent in the famous 35-acre park, from participating in large May Day rallies and Black Lives Matter protests to enjoying the musical and dance performances presented at the park's Levitt Pavilion every summer. There are always families at the playground and picnicking on the grassy areas, as well as daily chess games being played at lakeside tables.
For artist Miles Castro and his family, fond MacArthur Park memories include seeing 2,500 massive colorful spheres floating in the lake after they helped paint them for a public-art installation organized by Portraits of Hope in 2015. There's also Paak House in the Park, an annual community family day with live music and delicious food, hosted by the multitalented Anderson .Paak. The bearded man in this illustration is modeled after Paak, the older Latina woman is inspired by Abuelita in the animated film Coco (another Castro family favorite), and the elderly Filipino man honors the many Filipino American World War Il veterans who often gathered in the park to socialize and who occupied the area around the statue of General MacArthur for hundreds of days in 1997-98 to demand U.S. veterans' benefits.
And we have to mention how disco icon Donna Summer brought MacArthur Park into everyone's consciousness with her 1978 hit version of the epic Jimmy Webb-penned song "MacArthur Park" and its memorable lyric "someone left the cake out in the rain."

Join Andrea Richards from creative collective Narrated Objects as she guides participants through writing and meditation exercises aimed at unlocking the storytelling potential within our cherished possessions. Participants are encouraged to bring an object of personal significance, one that holds a special attachment.
