I am so blessed to have been invited to paint my biggest project yet, a 22 metre high silo in Philippi.
When the community of Philippi were asked about what could possibly be a positive outcome of the pandemic, they all spoke about the spirit of Ubuntu. Like so many South Africans, they had lost jobs and loved ones and as a result the community started helping each other. I wanted this mural to be a constant reminder and a celebration of their fighting spirit and that when they are faced with challenges, they choose to stand together and strengthen each other.
With help from my painting assistant @bernardgreybe , we painted for 15 days in the middle of winter while around us the country struggled with the ongoing pandemic, stricter 3rd wave lockdown restrictions and escalating taxi violence. It was one my most challenging projects but definitely the most rewarding.

āAfrikaans-The Originā is a mural telling the layered origin story of Afrikaans ā a language shaped over 350 years through the voices of enslaved Africans and Asians, European colonisers and traders, and the Indigenous people of Southern Africa.
The title, painted in Afrikaans Arabic by @faheem_rhoda_jackson , honours the fact that the first written Afrikaans was recorded in Arabic script.
