struggling for the words on this but this thursday our brother @frankiejaxnomad was abducted by ice and is currently in detention. if you know Baraka, i don’t need to explain, but if you don’t then i need you to know this man is such a pivotal member of our community, a saint of the arts, a creator of space and opportunity for others, a thoughtful connector of people, and a rock in times of need. the hardest times in my life have been made liveable in large part because of his friendship and capacity to create joy and laughter. his mom named him blessing for a reason.

expressive moments from Best Coast Book Club Volume 1 . this series is intended to highlight hip-hop and adjacent artistry rooted in literary spirit, community-building, and local history . without comparison, i believe it is important to illuminate connections between artists who have embodied experience within the geographic and temporal veins of the cultures in which we participate, to be honest about how our art is used for personal vs communal growth, and to identify the unique qualities that hold certain elements of our broader musical “scene” in cohesion . such granular attention is in service of associating artists with their peers in practice and pen (not just proximity), so as not to treat our artistic community as a monolith . some shit is just different and should be treated as such .
this is, too, in service of ensuring that some sphere of the artistic environment here is defined and curated by those of us whose praxis is historically entwined with the city and its cultural institutions ( all love to @project.blowed@bananasnetwork@lowendtheory@beatcinema & @moonvibezmusicfest ), something that i think we have a responsibility to make sure of ; this is not to say that being a native or having been around for some specific time period is all-important: art and intention reign supreme always & some of the best spaces here exist by the efforts and care of people who have adopted the city as home ( shouts out to @rarecandy.la )… rather, I think it is simply meaningful in its own right that those of us who remember nights rapping on Degnan and 43rd, or chiefing with G outside Tokyo Beat, don’t leave that spirit in memory but instead carry it forward through purposeful organization and action, because - though the past and present may be ontologically inseparable - we know that being passive about history’s narrative leads to strange futures . maybe i’m just prematurely becoming an old head though lol

streaming now, “adder’s bayonet of intractable grievance” featuring @rhyslangston ⚔️ with the last of the first edition CDs (+ books) getting scooped up quickly, we offer you one last gift of public knowledge before transitioning to the second edition discs and phasing into new seasons : when we had almost completed our initial excavation of the fabled armory, Manu and i encountered Rhys and his close colleague Three Slices as they repelled down into the depths of the decaying edifice on ropes of unicorn hair and ogre sinew, seeking out a particular armament at the behest of the Lord Chocolate Davis. despite our initial confusion and a moment of tense uncertainty, we agreed to venture forward together, until - completely by accident - we uncovered a weapon we all knew better than to seek out in the first place. alas, once we had found it, it was already too late.
