Thank you @SCPASA for having us at this year’s summit and for featuring this altar to honor two Filipino-American activists, Lyle Prijoles & Kai Sorem, who were among the 19 of our kababayan that were massacred in Toboso, Negros Occidental.
Kai was a trans woman from Seattle who was beloved by many as she was committed to serving and learning from the most oppressed communities, through her activism and cultural work.
Lyle was a 40 year-old from San Diego, who diligently advocated for human rights through his activism for decades. He was loved by his community and was dedicated to contributing to genuine change in any way he could.
Though we grieve and are enraged by this massacre, LA Kalusugan is inspired to continue to transform our rage into action because Lyle and Kai stood for building a genuinely healthy society until their last breath.

Our community came together in Los Angeles on Sunday, March 1 for an afternoon of stories, art, and dialogue reflecting on the 2025 NAFCON Medical Mission. Hosted by Siklab and @anakbayanla participants shared powerful firsthand accounts from flood- and typhoon-impacted communities, uplifting how government neglect and corruption continue to shape our kababayan’s health and living conditions.
Through photos, videos, and conversation, we traced the connections between these realities and forced migration—examining why so many Filipinos are pushed to leave home, and how those of us in the U.S. can stand in solidarity. At the same time, we celebrated the resilience of communities in the Philippines that continue to organize, care for one another, and rise together.
From healthcare workers to artists, everyone played a role in this collective effort—and together, we reached our fundraising goal for disaster relief. @nafconsocal 's Bayanihan Disaster Relief fundraiser is ongoing, so if you weren’t able to make it—and still want to be part of this work—you can support at bayanihanresponse.org
Maraming salamat to everyone who showed up, listened, shared, and continues to stay connected to the struggles and strength of our community—even from an ocean away. 🇵🇭✨

Siklab visited Alex Abelido’s $2 million house in Palos Verdes. Abelido, CEO of Legacy Construction Corporation, is one of the Philippine’s top flood project contractors and one of the major contractors implicated in the ghost project scandal where an estimated ₱118.5 billion pesos ($2 billion USD) meant to build flood prevention infrastructure was lost to corruption.
In 2025 alone, the Philippines was hit by 20 different environmental disasters. Hurricane Tino alone displaced 271,299 people, left 253 people dead and 119 still missing, according to UN estimates. Flood prevention projects would’ve reduced the impact of these disasters on communities.
President Ferdinand “Bong Bong” Marcos Jr. admitted several of the 10,000 projects his government had overseen since he came to power in 2022 were built with substandard materials or not at all, hence the name “ghost projects”.
Reporting by @inquirerdotnet revealed that Abelido is linked to at least 4 properties across SoCal, totaling to $4.95 million in value (₱264,120,600). For perspective, a minimum wage worker in the Philippines would have to work 2073 years consecutively to make that same amount.
Abelido denied that Legacy Construction Corp. has ghost projects or substandard flood projects during a House Infrastructure Committee hearing for official investigations into the scandal. Abelido has faced past corruption controversies and has the poorest record of the top 15 firms implicated in the ghost project corruption according to CPES ratings.
Today, on the 40th Anniversary of the People Power Revolution that ousted Marcos Sr., Filipinos in the Philippines and abroad, including here in Southern California, are demanding accountability and justice for those who’ve lost their lives and livelihood under Marcos Jr.

On February 17, we mobilized to the LA Superior County in Hollywood with about 60 family members, friends, and community supporters ready to demand Justice for Kaizann!
The result of the trial was a rude reminder of the failures of the justice system that prioritizes profit over people and fails our most vulnerable community members. We will not wait 6 months until his next hearing to make our demands for his immediate release heard!
Continue the fight and join the campaign! Sign onto the support letter and donate to Kaizann’s legal fees at linktr.ee/j4kaizann

HOLLYWOOD – Close to 60 of Kaizann’s family, friends, and community supporters joined the proceedings for Kaizann Guerrero on Tuesday Morning, February 17 at the LA Superior Court in Hollywood. The Justice 4 Kaizann community support rally was led by organizations National Alliance for Filipino Concerns (NAFCON), and members of Filipino Students in Health at CSULB and Filipino Migrant Center.
The rally uplifted demands for immediate release as he is being assessed for being mentally fit to stand trial. The support rally included joining Kaizann’s family inside the courthouse and conducting community outreach efforts outside.
The verdict for today’s proceeding is a continuation of Kaizann’s detainment at the Metropolitan State Hospital for an additional 6 months with his next evaluation happening on August 17, 2026 – close to one-year since he got detained.
Karinna Guerrero, mother of Kaizann, shared with the community in tears how “we need to continue fighting for his immediate release now, and not in 6 months” as she also thanked the community for the support her son is getting.
Other speakers also shared how his continuous detainment is detrimental to his recovery, even if in the Metropolitan State Hospital. “If he ever does get the proper medication and proper medical care, being separated from his family, friends, and community will make it more difficult for Kaizann to be fully mentally fit to stand trial, “ said Ari from Filipino Students in Health at CSULB. Groups question how the next 6 months will actually help Kaizann.
In addition, speakers claimed that there has been a lack of transparency from the Long Beach Police Department, the entity who conducted the arrests on August 21, 2025. Groups claim lack of proper investigation during the arrest of whether Kaizann was involved. Additionally, Ari shared that the LBPD recently denied the request for public records.

Last Thursday, Siklab spoke to healthcare workers picketing at Kaiser LA Medical Center on Sunset to learn about the ongoing strike against Kaiser. Approximately 31,000 registered nurses and healthcare workers launched an indefinite strike on Monday, Jan. 26, across Kaiser Permanente facilities, demanding fair contracts, better wages, increased staffing and investment into patient care.
The United Nurses Associations of California and the Union of Healthcare Professionals @unacuhcp are the unions representing the striking workers. Kaiser pharmacists and laboratory workers, represented by @ufcw324 , joined the picket lines on Monday, Feb. 9, launching a targeted 3-day action to apply pressure to Kaiser, according to union representatives. In December, the UNAC/UNHCP filed an unfair labor practice charge at the National Labor Relations Board against Kaiser Permanente, alleging Kaiser failed to engage in negotiations after historic strikes last October.
Kaiser is the largest private employer in California. According to data from the California Board of Registered Nursing, about ⅕ of nurses in California identify as Filipino. Healthcare workers told Siklab about a decline in staffing support, long waiting periods and various challenges that are impacting the quality of patient care after mass layoffs and budget cuts at Kaiser last year.
Tax forms from 2020 to 2023 reveal that Kaiser invests at least $60 billion in reserves to private corporations and foreign entities, including defense companies and private prison groups like Lockheed Martin, Boeing, Palantir, The GEO Group, CoreCivic, etc. The union has vocally criticized Kaiser’s investments, highlighting other unethical practices in their recent “Profits Over Patients” report.
