“Taamir (Bahriyyeh)” is the new single by Mayssa Jallad
@mayssajallad .
A major new work.
South-east of Saida (the historic port on Lebanon’s southern coast), two landscapes grew side by side: Ain el Helwe refugee camp and the Taamir housing project.
After the 1956 earthquake, the state drafted a vision for “New Saida”, designed by French architect Michel Ecochard. Between 1958 and 1968, concrete housing blocks rose, planned and modern, yet unevenly distributed. Some apartments took the form of two-story “villas.” The nearby camp, already eight years old, was absent from the plan.
In 1967, floods destroyed fishermen’s homes. A box of keys changed hands. The buildings they occupied became known as the “Bahriyyeh,” expanding over time as families multiplied and political ties solidified.
Down the road, the camp was both refuge and training ground. After the 1969 Cairo Accord, armed groups operated more freely from south Lebanon. Retaliation followed retaliation — from the Bahr el Baqar school bombing to the Avivim school bus attack in 1970.
With “Taamir (Bahriyyeh)”, Mayssa carries these histories into song — clear-eyed and unyielding.
