This was a tough one to get right. We worked with @legendcustomwoodworking on this existing stair, and the geometry was pretty complicated. To make sure everything fit, we started with a 3D laser scan of the entire space. That let us design and build the solid white oak treads in the shop, knowing they’d line up perfectly during the install. It’s a clean look that balances the wood and steel well, and updates this stair nicely. Definitely one worth sharing. #mwdesignworkshop #stairbuild #whiteoak #metalwork #3dscanning #custommade #woodworking #designbuild #interiordetails

Kitchen islands are often the heart of the home, but standard supports can be a constant headache for seating. For this project, we integrated the structural support directly into the island itself. By cantilevering the walnut surface, we eliminated the need for traditional legs, ensuring there’s nothing to interfere with legroom or the flow of the room. This was part of a larger project we completed alongside the main staircase for the Lakehouse. It’s all about those subtle functional details that make a space work better. We are excited to see this project for @jhldesign and @wyatt.construction starting to come together. We spent a lot of time dialing in the sweep of that curve to make sure it felt natural while staying tight to the architecture. It’s currently in progress, but seeing the steel installed against the glass really shows the direction we’re heading. Looking forward to the final reveal on this one. The Perlee Vineyards project is a great look at how we combine tech with hands-on building. Working with @taylorlombardoarchitects and @sarastorydesign , we started by planning everything in 3D. This helped us map out every curve before we ever cut a piece of wood. The stairs use a heavy steel frame covered in white oak, with each curved part carved on our CNC machine to make sure it fits the steel perfectly. It has been a huge team effort with @thegrantcompany1987 to get these big pieces ready. Seeing the project move from a drawing to the shop floor is the best part of the job. This custom fireplace surround for the @westmanhotelbend renovation in Bend was a great opportunity to lean into some historic roots. We are working inside an old post office building, so the design intent was all about that Art Deco aesthetic that fits the original character of the space. The structure is a custom steel framework that we are cladding entirely in brass. We made the call to use raw, unlacquered brass for this one. I have always preferred leaving brass as a living finish because it allows the material to naturally develop a patina and modeling over time. As it gets handled and ages, it tells the story of the building. It is a project where the material choice is just as important as the fabrication itself. We are looking forward to seeing how this one settles into the hotel and starts to take on its own character through the years. This floating mono-stringer stair is a perfect example of why we prefer a tailored approach over "standard" systems. Instead of off-the-shelf brackets, we mortised the mounting plates directly into the underside of the solid white oak treads for a completely seamless look. The engineering is entirely concealed behind the drywall and under the sub-floor tile, allowing the structure to feel like it is emerging from the room itself. We even managed to install a solid, monolithic oak landing and custom notched the window-side treads to keep the gaps safe and to code. To finish it off, we integrated LED lighting with custom wire routing through the treads and landing, paired with a low-iron Starphire glass guardrail and a continuous, site-fit stainless handrail. It is a high-precision build where the complex work stays hidden, leaving only the craftsmanship on display. #MWDesignWorkshop #FloatingStairs #WhiteOak #CustomFabrication #ModernArchitecture #StaircaseDesign #InteriorDetail #Craftsmanship #MetalAndWood

One of the most ambitious projects we’ve ever had the privilege to build. This semi freestanding curved stair is a study in what happens when everyone is aligned. Designed in close collaboration with @otisconstruction , @jhinteriordesign , and @yiannidoulis , it brings together modern machine precision and old world hand craftsmanship in a way that truly pushes the boundaries. It is rare to see a design this complex come together so seamlessly, and it is a testament to the team involved. Looking back at this custom range hood project from 2020. This was a unique exercise in blending dissimilar metals to create a seamless, high end aesthetic. We teamed up with @monogramcustomhomes on this one. For the cladding, we used stainless steel finished with a deep blackened patina. To add some contrast, we integrated brass bar accents throughout the piece, giving each strip an antique rubbed patina. The process started with a custom wood subframe we built specifically to support both the range hood and our metal cladding. It is those hidden details that ensure a piece of this scale stays secure and looks perfect for years to come. Even six years later, this combination of blackened stainless and warm brass remains one of our favorite material palettes. #mwdesignworkshop #monogramhomes #customrangehood #metalfinishing #blackenedstainless #brassaccents #kitchendesign #ArchitecturalMetal #customfabrication #interiordetails #craftsmanship

Part 4: When high-tech meets handmade. For a long time, we used advanced technology like 3D design and CNC carving just to make our jobs simpler. What we realized is that these tools do not replace craftsmanship; they unlock it. They are essential for pushing the boundaries of what is possible, like creating this intricate, one of a kind spiral handrail. When you integrate technical tools like CNC into a collaborative design process, every stakeholder wins. It ensures absolute precision while still honoring the long term significance of truly custom craftsmanship. This blend of innovation and tradition is exactly what we love exploring alongside the team at @riddleconstruction.co . This project was a true exercise in integrating our design, fabrication, and woodworking skills into a single finished piece. We sourced ultra wide Oregon White Oak from @zenaforestproducts for the treads, each featuring an integrated LED lighting strip tucked under the nosing for a clean, modern glow. The blackened steel vertical guardrail system isn't just for show. It was engineered to double as the structural support for every single tread. It is the kind of technical challenge we love to solve alongside a great team like @wadedesignarchitects_ and @monogramcustomhomes . #mwdesignworkshop #wadedesignarchitects #monogramcustomhomes #zenaforestproducts #oregonwhiteoak #staircasedesign #moderncraft #blackenedsteel #customfabrication #architecturedetails

Part 3: The power of a 3D vision. Most homeowners struggle to read 2D blueprints, which is why we lean so heavily into 3D modeling. It is an invaluable part of our process because it lets the client actually visualize the experience—like walking down a spiral staircase before we even cut the first piece of wood. A seamless build only happens through intense coordination. We are constantly syncing our shop drawings with the schedules of the framers, superintendents, and stain companies. It was a pleasure to run this process alongside the team at @riddleconstruction.co , where every detail is executed with the big picture in mind. It’s been a year since this home was featured in Architectural Digest, but the details of the Pine Haven stair are worth a closer look. We wanted to show the parts the magazine cameras might have missed. These treads are custom-sawn veneers miter-wrapped around 1/2” plate steel supports—all with zero visible fasteners. We integrated the wood and metal so cleanly there isn't a visible joint between the two. The floating atrium surrounds a natural green space, and at night, the integrated LED lighting gives the whole home a comforting glow. It’s a study in how traditional wood-to-metal tenon joints can feel completely modern when executed with precision. Amazing team effort from @lucasinterior on the interiors, @hayerarchitecture for the architecture, and @hillconstructioncompany on the build. @dreams.luxury.finishes came in big for matching the treads to the engineered flooring. #mwdesignworkshop #pinehaven #architecturaldigest #stairbuilder #finewoodworking #floatingstairs #modernarchitecture #DetailObsessed #customhome
