Born on this day in 1811, Chang and Eng Bunker were conjoined twins, joined by their livers. They came to the United States as teenagers from Thailand to perform in a traveling circus, where they quickly gained fame and ultimately represented themselves in the business. In the 1840s, they settled in North Carolina, married sisters Sarah Ann and Adelaide Yates, and had a total of 21 children. Pictured here is an illustration of Chang and Eng by Alfred A. Hoffy from 1837, which is featured in our 2026 Wall Calendar. Learn more about the image through our Historical Medical Library Catalog (search call no. PF4) at the link in our bio. Museum visitors can view the twins' conjoined livers and the plaster death cast of their torsos. Learn more on our website.

What does it take to move a 650-pound iron lung to the Museum's second floor? We discovered just how many crew members were needed when they relocated this beloved collection item to its new home in the Norris Gallery! The iron lung will be featured in our upcoming special exhibition, "Creating a City of Medicine."

Space Melt Cinema is kicking off the summer the best way we know how: gothic cinema and medical history. We are honored to team up with the Mütter Museum to close out their blockbuster “Vampirism” Pop-Up Exhibit with a screening of our favorite movie: Nosferatu the Vampyre (1979). Directed by icon of extremity, Werner Herzog, and starring Herzog’s frenemy and muse, Klaus Kinski, Nosferatu perfectly captures the nature of the original vampire myth. Before the screening, join us for an abbreviated talk from Museum Educator Jo D’Avella on the people, places, and medical conditions that inspired the iconic characteristics of the vampire. We will also be hosting our signature DVD Swap Box and, I know you’ve been waiting for this one, GOURMET HOT DOGS ARE BACK!!!! Chow down on a dog while you watch Isabelle Adjani scream or check out some of the vampiric ephemera on display. Doors will open 30 minutes before the talk and film to allow guests to peruse the collection items on display, talk to Museum staff about vampirism and the roots of its mythology, take a chance at the swap box, and, of course, eat multiple hot dogs. Get your ticket now at the link in our bio or on the Mütter Museum’s website! Tickets include popcorn, soft drinks, and admission to the pop up as well as the screening. Vampire costumes encouraged and anybody wearing one will get a free DVD from us! We hope to see you there!
