My brain is still buzzing from my three days in Vermont. The Vermont All-State Modern Band was absolutely outstanding. Huge thank you to the Vermont Music Educators Association for investing in the Modern Band experience and believing in the power of popular music education and inclusion. Shoutout to @saturnpeopleproductions Brian Boyes and @mikim434 for your fellowship, inspiration, and incredible work. In just a few days, I gained not only colleagues, but friends. Also thank you to @sarahgulishmusic for throwing my name in the hat! There is tremendous work happening in popular music education in Vermont. If Atlanta was my highlight last year, Vermont may be the highlight this year. This experience was truly transformational, and I’m excited to continue sharing and expanding the work happening in popular music education.

My new favorite thing to do for my birthday is to spend time with my family and unplugg for a few days. This year I spent it in Auburn with my two favorite people and it was amazing! Thank you to everyone who called, texted, and left messages. It means the world to me! Now off to Vermont for a little All-State Modern Band!!!

This may be one of my favorite clips from the entire school year because it captures so much of what I believe music education can be. It’s a reminder that music theory, musicianship, and high-level learning can happen in any genre and through any style of music. We don’t have to choose between rigor and relevance. In this clip, you see students collaborating, learning music theory through popular music, creating together, and engaging with music that actually interests them. You see the teacher acting as a facilitator instead of the sole source of knowledge. You see fun, curiosity, ownership, and real musical learning happening at the same time. I just hope we continue opening the door for more students to see themselves in music education. #popularmusiceducation #studentcentered #culturalrelevance

More music for more students. . . . . . . . I feel like some of us are missing the AND part... No one wants to get rid of the big 3, that would be counter productive. #studentcentered #culturallyrelevantteaching #popularmusiceducation

Thought of the moment..... It's very easy to reach the students that are prepared, but what about the others who are simply not there yet? How are we connecting, lifting, and raising them? #studentcentered #musiceducationmatters #musiceducationforall

Peace written by the incomparable @_markomusic @_m.arko . Shaka is probably one of the most focused and talented people I have ever worked. All of these students are among some of the hardest working in the building, and it is a privelage to watch their growth. #studentcentered #culturallyrelevantteaching

Experimenting with something different this semester where I am intentional focusing on the pedagogy with my music ed Students in the pop ensemble. Today in about 25 mins we picked up a guitar for first time, learned about the strings and parts of the guitar. Talked about intervals, chord progressions, transposing, guitar chord charts, learned 3 easy chords, and learned a song. Then did 2 pop in concerts.🤣 #popularmusiceducation #studentcentered #culturallyrelevantteaching #musiceducation
