Humanist Modernity. The Unbuilt Chandigarh of Maciej Nowicki (12 May – 15 July 2026) Government Museum and Art Gallery, Chandigarh
Maciej Nowicki came to India with ideas developed
in the ruins of Warsaw — that a city is an organism,
not a collection of functions. In Raleigh he proved
that structure and space could be designed as one
thing, not two. The Leaf Plan was not an import
of European or American thinking. It was a response
to the topography of the Punjab plains, to the winds,
to the logic of how a new city grows outward from
a centre. That dialogue between a Polish architect
and an Indian landscape produced something none
of those places could have generated alone.
Nowicki died before Chandigarh was built.
His ideas did not. The exhibition moves from Warsaw
through Raleigh to Chandigarh because that is the
actual trajectory of the thinking. The Leaf Plan
became a palimpsest.
This story was always the work of two people.
Stanisława Nowicka co-developed the ideas and
the method we call humanist modernism. She went on
to become the first woman to hold the rank of full
professor of architecture in American history.
Organised by the National Institute of Architecture
and Urban Planning, Warsaw / Government Museum
and Art Gallery, Chandigarh / Polish Institute,
New Delhi. Co-financed by the @kultura_gov_pl

"Bhils Hunting Deer At Night" - Mughal painting; 18th Century - a common scene depicted in miniature paintings most known for their focus on the striking torchlight guiding the night hunt. A uni-directional light which in other paintings from the same series, shows through a funnel. Inviting inputs on how these torch lights may have been made, in the comments please.
Don't you think this is highly advanced technology?

Pillar Capital from Kangra, Himachal Pradesh standing right as you enter the museum. Notice how the pot / matka is brimming with vines and foliage - a symbol of prosperity often depicted on pillar capitals especially on ones found in temples.
