It was an honour to open proceedings with a poem ahead of such a monumental line up for the '@queercoffeelinkups x @get_mouthy_leicester Link Up' last month. The poem is about the nuances and internal complexities around identity and representation in post(?)colonial Britain.
I always try to sprinkle in a bit of humour, and I finally got to perform my favourite verse as a duologue thanks to @reefy_roo who absolutely smashed it out the park!

In times of mass violence and truth hiding, creating art and story sharing matter more than ever.
Rather than approaching topics academically, Art for Freedom was centred on lived experience and the humanising of the ‘other’ through writing, poetry performances, and short films.
Feedback revealed attendees needed this space to process, reflect, and feel.
I had the pleasure of facilitating the workshop. We explored an oral source recounting the departure of South Asian Ugandan refugees to Leicester, an excerpt from the incredible novel The Lonely Londoners by Sam Selvon, and one of my favourite poems, The Travelling Onion by Naomi Shihab Nye.
All of these were used to explore our core theme of home. Attendees were given one discussion prompt and one writing prompt for each stimulus, which they then used to write their own poems, with optional guidance.
You know something is for you when you feel so energised afterwards! Work like this aligns with a huge part of my purpose, and posting this is part of a promise to myself to share what I get up to this year, mainly with the intention of doing more of what I love. 💫🎨✨

It was such a pleasure to facilitate Act Now by @apittame 💫
We kicked off with exercises to build ensemble trust and non-verbal communication, leading on to the core focus of the session: using physical theatre to bring poetry to life.
Each of the three final groups received a verse from a different poem and were tasked with creating a rough draft performance using only that verse. Later, they layered in sound and selected lines from the poem, once they were given the title and context.
The pieces were brilliant, and the energy in the room was beautiful. ✨
