A little over a month ago, I began talking with John Zouridis about our shared enthusiasm for the 2005 Doctor Doom helmet from Fantastic Four. I’d recently printed one of the commonly available models and thought it was close enough to do the job, but John was actively working to obtain the most screen accurate model of the original piece as possible.
Thus began the collaboration and feedback loop between me, John, and his 3D artist, Vlad of Sonndersmith. After scouring the internet for all of the reference material possible and making numerous tweaks, I’m confident that this model Vlad created is the most accurate recreation of that helmet, originally designed and created by Ironhead Studio.
Vlad’s work is gorgeous and the finished piece is so satisfying to hold in my hands.
This is all printed on a @formlabs Form 3L. Main helmet is in grey, detail pieces in durable.
The helmet was wet sanded, given a single coating of primer, painted silver, clear coated with a satin finish, and given a wash of yellow ochre oil paint.

Been AWOL for a week and a half (with good reason, we just welcomed a new member to our family). I have a doozy of a post today. I’m happy to report that the Green Goblin helmet is finally finished.
About a week ago, I had it as far as the clear coating stage and was about to call it done as far as the paint was concerned. But the more I looked at it, the more disappointed I became because it was far from what I thought of as “perfect”. I know I received many positive comments on my build posts (thank you all for that), but all I could see were the drips and spots in the paint that I’d spent so much time trying to perfect. So a few days ago, I resanded the entire helmet and started back at the black base coat, completely repainting the whole thing.
My wife maybe thought I was losing my mind, but I’m so much happier with the results, so it was 100% worth the effort. The point? In making, you always have to be willing to go back to the drawing board and start the next iteration.

We are nearing the end of production on the new run of Goldtronic voice changers. Once the plastic injection molds are completed, they will inject the first run of these parts in ABS.

Doom is one of those characters I keep coming back to. Each file I’ve printed and finished has had something that sets it apart from the others.
This one from visageartproductions nails so many of the features that others have missed.
But thanks to some amazing reference shared by danmakesstuff a few months back, the thing I’m most proud of with this are the finishes. Especially the cheek pieces, which I realized were actually semi-transparent rather than metal.

I wanted to share something that’s been in the works for a few months now.
Here is the final product of my machined First Avenger/ Smithsonian back buckle!
They are machined out of solid aircraft aluminum. They also feature a functional hinge between the two pieces. These are the most accurate and highest grade buckles of this kind to find on the market.

It’s always nice to revisit a prop when you get better reference for it.
I was very proud of my replica of the necklace that Sidney gets from Derek in Scream 2, but recently got a much better look at the screen used prop and realized that there was a lot to fix.
So with that in mind, I created a v2 of that prop and I’m so happy I did. This new one is much closer to the real deal.
As with the first, this is nice stainless steel, tumbled to a clean, shiny finish.

As a collector, I think Hasbro has finally figured out how to cater to all the adult nerds out there, and they’re absolutely crushing it. They aren’t always the most accurate pieces, but the price is right and they’re damn cool.
For anyone curious, here you can see the Hasbro piece next to my metal replica. It’s quite a bit bigger than mine, which was made using measurements of the screen used piece.

Dressing up for Halloween at work is an absolute must. I know there are many places out there that don’t engage in such activities, but I’ve always been fortunate to work with other people who get into it and make it fun.
This year for Halloween at Formlabs, I wanted to do my own take on the Green Goblin, taking some inspiration from different versions of the character that I love.
Completed with a mask from Composite FX, I love the end result.
