Happy Friday to everyone but the tech bros with peptide-induced spontaneous erections 😑
🎧Check out this week’s @wowiftruepod 💉 Party drugs are out, and injecting grey market peptides with your LinkedIn connections at Silicon Valley house parties is in. Yes, the biohacker tech bros have peptide dealers in China who are sending them dubious chemicals to construct things like “the Wolverine stack,” which are supposed to make them more alert and/or younger and/or tanner? This doesn’t make any sense, which is why we brought in our friends and actual scientists from Tiny Matters — Dr. Sam Jones and Dr. Deboki Chakravarti — to explain to us the science (or lackthereof?) behind the peptide craze.
How is AI like a mirror? You’re always looking into the past.
AI ethicist Professor Shannon Vallor explained some of the philosophical implications of the debate around the technology.

History is much more than “line go up,” as @wyman_patrick says. If we zoom in on how people actually lived, we can tell a truer messier story about the past. We can live with empathy.

💄Tiny Matters EPISODE 109: ‘Clean beauty’: Paraben panic, scent skepticism, and the anti-vax pipeline with Michelle Wong @labmuffinbeautyscience
In the early 1930s, a “new and improved” eyelash dye called Lash Lure blinded more than a dozen women, ultimately forcing the FDA to pass new regulations on cosmetics. Nearly a century later, beauty remains far safer than it was in the past, but you could argue that beauty marketing has become far more insidious, with vague language and chemophobic claims to push consumers toward products. In this episode, we chat with chemist and science communicator Michelle Wong to unpack the booming “clean beauty” industry, including a conversation about parabens and fragrances and how chemophobia (a fear of chemicals) early in life can become a gateway to broader anti-science thinking, including anti-vax.
