History is much more than “line go up,” as @wyman_patrick says. If we zoom in on how people actually lived, we can tell a truer messier story about the past. We can live with empathy.

She was buried 9,000 years ago wearing an antlered headdress, 140 elk and boar teeth, and the pierced tongue bone of a boar around her neck. A burial like this is an honor.
The woman had a physical condition that caused shaking fits, double vision, twitching eyelids, and sensations of insects or flames crawling across her skin. By her community, this condition was understood not as illness but as access to a world the rest of them couldn't reach.
Her bones confirm the rest. In a foraging community where survival required constant, grueling physical work, she did none of it. Her skeleton shows no signs of hard labor. Someone cared for her.
Finding like these show that the deep human past was far more sophisticated than most people assume. 🔗 Discover more at the link in our bio.

The Indus Valley civilization didn't disappear overnight. When mega droughts began devastating their region, they adapted - switching crops, changing farming methods, doing everything they could to outlast conditions that were working against them. They weren't passive. They weren't foolish. They just ran out of time.
Historian Patrick Wyman, author of Lost Worlds: How Humans Tried, Failed, Succeeded, and Built Our World, joins Critically Speaking to explain what the rise and fall of ancient societies can teach us about resilience, adaptation, and the decisions we're making right now.
