Stackable hollow pebbles made of different coloured Stoneware clay using both the slab building technique + #nerikomi. I miss making these objects as it’s been a while actually, come to think of it. All work and no play makes me a dull Ceramist .

Here’s a little anecdote. I once had a visitor pass by a group exhibition to which I was part of, asked me what use are these for and who would buy them? (His wife gave him a tough nudge with the side of her elbow). I smiled and thought well, the question isn’t as offensive as it sounded, rather too intellectual but relevant though in this capitalist world.
.
Did you know though, many species of otters are known to toss pebbles around, often while lying on their backs, in what appears to be an example of animals keeping & playing with inanimate objects. Under each forearm are baggy pockets of loose skin. The sea otter uses these pockets to store food it has gathered. It also stores favorite rocks that it uses for cracking open mollusks and clams. NOW we’re talking !!

🌟 I failed drastically not so long ago in trying to recreate this pattern which first made it’s debut last August. With this kind of pattern the key is often knowing when to stop, simply because you can’t really see how far you’ve gone - tis the case with this mix-clay technique. Every failure is indeed a lesson - if you’re up for the challenge.

So in a nutshell, it’s worked out even better this time around thanks to Mr Failure!

A mix of stoneware clay fired up to 1250degrees. Glazed black on the inside and lightly in clear glaze on the outside as I’m not a fan of shiny surfaces.

Découvrez la technique à la plaque terres mêlées avec Cynthia aka mud_manipulator dans son atelier LavaLava partagé dans le plus ancien quartier de Marseille dans le Panier.
Cette initiation de 2h30, accessible à tous les niveaux, vous invite à explorer l’art de mélanger des argiles (grès) de couleurs différentes pour créer un motif, puis à le transformer en un objet de vaisselle de votre choix selon la technique de la plaque.
Une fois votre pièce terminée, nous nous chargeons du reste : le séchage, le poncage, l’émaillage (transparent) et deux cuissons dans notre four à 980 et enfin à 1250 degrés. Ce processus peut prendre jusqu’à 2 à 3 semaines maximum.

• Niveau : tous niveaux (débutants, passionnés et professionnels)
• Durée : 2h30
• Horaires : jeudi soir de 17h30 à 20h ou dimanche de 13h30 à 16h
• Lieu : Atelier LavaLava, 10 rue du refuge 13002, Marseille
• Minimum 2 personnes pour démarrer le cours et chaque cours peut accueillir jusqu’à 5 personnes maximum.

I produce small series that can’t be replicated for technical reasons. I may be able to mix the same colours and repeat the same gesture for this particular pattern but they’ll never be the same. Posting some pics of pieces I feel once they’re gone they’re gone …to a good home we hope!
