It is with deep sadness that we let you know of Michael Tilson Thomas’s passing on April 22, 2026. In 2021, Michael was diagnosed with Glioblastoma Multiforme, an aggressive type of brain cancer. Through his illness he continued to make music—a testament to his legacy as an artist and communicator. He was preceded in death by his husband Joshua Robison, and passed away at home surrounded by loved ones and family. Joshua and Michael are survived by their sisters, nieces and nephews. 💙

It is with great sadness that we share with you that Michael’s husband, Joshua Robison, passed away in his sleep during the night of February 22. Everyone who knew Joshua understood what a passionate and generous person he was. He will be profoundly missed by all of us. 💙
The New World Symphony was featured in the Discovery Channel’s “Let’s Go Places” in 2017. Hosts Brian Brushwood and Justin Robert Young toured the New World Center, received a conducting lesson from Michael Tilson Thomas, and captured a unique behind-the-scenes rehearsal experience. The entire feature was filmed for 360-degree viewing.

Michael Tilson Thomas and his grandparents! The Thomashefskys, a project deeply meaningful to MTT, tells the remarkable story of his grandparents, Bessie and Boris Thomashefsky—icons of the Yiddish stage. Originally performed at the Lincoln Theatre, the production was later revived and filmed at the New World Center in 2011 to widespread praise.

New World Symphony’s debut album was Tangazo! It was Grammy-nominated and named one of the top records of 1993 by Stereo Review. Conducted by Michael Tilson Thomas, the album showcased the vibrant music of Latin America and embodied NWS’s early mission of cross-cultural exploration and collaboration. Featuring works by Chávez, Copland, Roldán, Revueltas, García-Caturla, Piazzolla, and Ginastera, it was recorded right here in South Florida at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts.

New World Symphony’s multi-city European tour! In February 1998, NWS celebrated its 10th Anniversary with a major moment: a multi-city European tour with the world-renowned soprano, Barbara Hendricks. 🌍 From London to Paris, Amsterdam to Vienna, we took Miami to the world. To quote our late Board Chair Judy Weiser, "Gutsy, because all of these places had fabulous orchestras of their own... we were bringing Miami to the world."

En febrero de 1998, la NWS celebró su décimo aniversario con un momento histórico: una gira por varias ciudades de Europa junto a la reconocida soprano Barbara Hendricks. 🌍 De Londres a París, de Ámsterdam a Viena, llevamos a Miami al mundo. New World Symphony mourns the passing of Joshua Robison, who died on February 22. As beloved husband of our Co-Founder and Artistic Director Laureate Michael Tilson Thomas (MTT), Joshua was a cherished member of the New World Symphony family whose warmth, generosity and strength touched all who had the privilege of knowing him.
For more than 50 years, Joshua’s love and steadfast support uplifted MTT and enriched the broader musical community, helping sustain the spirit of compassion, connection, and shared purpose that defines our institution. We hold MTT and all who loved Joshua in our thoughts during this time. @mtilsonthomas
