What a magical evening with @syr_arch alum in Seoul. After a wonderful dinner at a nearby restaurant, we walked to the home of @syr_arch alum Yun Sang-koo (B.Arch, M.Arch) eldest son of former Korean president Yun Po-Sun, where we shared drinks and food and had an engaging discussion about our plans in Korea. Thank you to all our alum who came to the dinner and who support our school and university.

The Financial Times of London published a very nice story this weekend, "Where geniuses scrawled," by Helen Barrett, featuring my own work desk as well as desks that belonged to luminaires such as Joan Didion, Sir Michael Caine, Sir Roger Moore, John le Carré and others. Of course I am not the genius who scrawled on this desk. That genius is instead Marcel Breuer, who designed and worked on it for many years prior to me receiving the desk in 2019 from Judith Papachristou, widow of Tician Papachristou, an internationally known modernist architect and author who worked alongside Breuer for more than a decade. In 1976, Breuer retired from active practice. He passed away five years later, at the age of 79. Tician Papachristou, a partner in Marcel Breuer Associates, was given Breuer’s personal desk from the firm. The desk remained in the Papachristou family home in Sheffield, Massachusetts for many years thereafter. In 2019 Judith Papachristou contacted Syracuse University through architect Bruce Fowle ’60, Syracuse Architecture alumnus, to see whether there might be interest in the desk. Given the reputation of Syracuse Architecture and the connection to Breuer—he began donating his papers to Syracuse University beginning in the late 1960s—she believed that the University would provide the right home for the desk. The Marcel Breuer Papers, housed at Syracuse University Libraries Special Collections Research Center (SCRC), collects more than 60 years of work from every phase of Breuer’s long and distinguished career. I feel very lucky that I am able to continue to use this remarkable desk and that many of our students, alum, faculty and parents have been able to visit and see the desk in my office and share this wonderful story. Special thanks to Traci Washburn, Syracuse Architecture Assistant Dean for Development, who was instrumental in obtaining the desk. Open now at the Everson Museum of Art, "A Little Bit of Syracuse," produced by @syr_arch students and curated by Li Han and Hu Yan, founders of renowned Beijing-based @drawingarchitecturestudio / Graphic design by @commonnameny . Drawing on the visual narrative techniques of Japanese graphic novels and traditional Chinese landscape painting, ten Syracuse Architecture students developed an artistic tableau of the city, which features an eighty-foot scroll drawing and eighty hand-made models of local buildings. The exhibition is a narrative study of the often-overlooked structures that form the backdrop of everyday life in Syracuse. @syr_gsa
