Part 6: Physical Safety in the Classroom
Welcome to my classroom!
Every choice in this space is intentional, rooted in trauma-informed practices to create a safe, supportive, and inclusive environment.
Here’s how l’ve set it up:
❤️Daily schedules, supply stations, and
‘what we did’ posts: These create predictability and reduce anxiety, helping students feel secure and ready to focus.
💙Fake plants and soft lighting: I specialize in low-maintenance décor (haha) that creates a calming atmosphere.
💜Tables in rows: While l’ve enjoyed flexible seating in the past, this familiar setup helps my students feel safe and in control.
💚Treaty promises: We acknowledge that we live, work, and play on Treaty 4 Territory, weaving this understanding into our shared space.
💛Encouraging reminders (‘We can do hard things!’): Visual cues build resilience and confidence.
🧡Writing prompts and favorite student quotes: Personalized touches help students feel seen, supported, and valued.
🩷Bulletin boards for mental health:
Supporting students during Saskatchewan’s cold, dark months is critical.
🩵 @amplifierart posters: Representation matters; students should see themselves reflected in their space.
🖤Community cart: Providing essential supplies ensures no student feels left out or unsupported.
🤎Spaces for connection: Whether it’s a stool for me to join students or a spot for them to sit with me, these spaces foster relationships.
It’s not perfect-there’s always room to grow
—but it’s a space where students feel calm, supported, and seen.
How do you create safety and connection in your classroom? Let’s share ideas and keep building together.

Part 5: The Impact of Trauma on Students
Just going to shout it for everyone at the back: ALL BEHAVIOR IS COMMUNICATION.
Trauma affects everyone differently and those impacts come out in the classroom in a variety of ways.
So lean in.
Ask yourself “What is this student trying to communicate?”
Lead with empathy.
This is where the magic happens ✨
Part 3: What is Trauma?
Sometimes it’s the everyday stressors that build up and overwhelm us.
Trauma is incredibly distressing and overwhelms our ability to cope.
It comes from a variety of places: single events, repeated exposure to stress, or multiple invasive events.
Trauma impacts us emotionally, psychologically, and sometimes physically.
It disrupts our sense of safety, connection, and self, impacting our brain and behavior.
Trauma isn’t just something that has happened to you—it shapes the way you experience the world.
Understanding it can help us create braver learning spaces for everyone.

Part 2: Why Trauma-Integrated Education Matters
Trauma isn’t just an individual experience. Trauma is intertwined with our systems, histories, and communities. Systemic trauma leaves scars that pass through generations and shape the present, affecting the students in our classrooms.
Practicing trauma-integrated education, we can acknowledge these long-term impacts and work to create spaces where students feel brave and supported. It’s about recognizing the weight of systemic barriers while helping students and their communities find strength and resilience.
This work matters because healing is possible. And education systems in #canada have caused enough harm. We must be part of that healing.

Part 1: What is Trauma-Integrated Education?
Trauma-integrated education is about more than just addressing individual experiences.
It’s about creating classrooms where students feel safe, supported, and ready to learn.
By recognizing the impact of trauma, and using the four Rs - Realization, Recognition, Response, and Resisting Retraumatization - we can build stronger, more empathetic school communities. It’s not just about helping students - it’s about supporting teachers too

Y’alllll. I met @_connie_walker and it needed a permanent spot on my feed. Thanks to @firstnationsuniversity for the brilliant conference today about Indigenous Peoples, Media & Democracy ❤️
I plan to use these for writer’s notebook prompts. What questions should I add?
Also, shoutout to @taughtbylouttit for teaching me how to use the freeze button 😂
