Steve Olson is a multifaceted legend, beginning as one of skateboarding’s first stars in the 1970s and evolving into a prominent artist in L.A. He is credited with injecting Southern California’s skate culture with a punk rock edge, fundamentally transforming the sport.
In the late 1970s, Olson helped establish Santa Cruz’s reputation as an anarchic skate brand, becoming the first skater to infuse punk rock into the sport. His rebellious spirit caught on, earning him the title of ‘Skateboarder of the Year’ by Skateboarder Magazine in 1978. This award marked a shift towards a more raw and unfiltered skateboarding culture. In 2014, Olson was inducted into the Skateboarding Hall of Fame.
While his passion for skateboarding endures, Olson has seamlessly transitioned into the art world. Known for taking bold risks, his contemporary modernist work has been showcased in prestigious galleries such as Medium Exchange Gallery in New York, Diane Rosenstein Gallery in Los Angeles, Bowman Gallery in Beverly Hills, and the Known Gallery in Los Angeles. His piece “Buy Sexual” (2002) was notably removed from a public exhibition in Santa Barbara in 2015 due to its provocative nature.
Olson also extends his influence through his podcast “Mind if I Smoke,” co-hosted with custom bike builder Yaniv Evan. The show features unfiltered, risk-filled stories that captivate a wide audience.
In July 2023, Olson reunited with fellow skateboarding pioneers at the Los Angeles art and music collective Surf Skate Roots Rock, highlighting his ongoing impact in both skateboarding and art.
Steve Olson remains a dynamic figure, continuously pushing boundaries and embodying a spirit of innovation and rebellion that inspires many across different fields.
