“Floating Nest: Future Birdsongs”
This summer, my friend @mozari and I collaborated on a sound installation called “Floating Nest: Future Birdsongs” in Chicago’s Millennium Park.
It took the calls of 28 birds native to the Chicagoland area and provided a speculative vantage on how a changing climate may affect the songs they sing (via collage, time-stretching and resynthesis).
This was installed as part of the 2024 Urban+Nature Sonic Pavilion event, organized by @esschicago , @dr.aloi and @chicagodcase and ran from July-August in @millennium_park . “Future Birdsongs” was a multi-channel piece, mixed for the park’s overhead 28-speaker array and featured flocking birds, haunted choirs and crashing waves in constant motion above the listeners.
An endless thank you to Milad, the Experimental Sound Studio, Chris and Giovanni, and to my fellow artists who shared work in the installation. This was an incredible time and I’m honored to have been a part of it.
Slide 2 is a video I filmed at home in 2008, playing around with homemade equipment in one of my first synthesized birdsong experiments.
“Floating Nest” starts this weekend!!
Honored to share a new 24-channel sound work with my friend and collaborator Milad Mozari (@mozari ), premiering this Saturday, July 13 in downtown Chicago at Pritzker Pavilion as part of “the urban + nature sonic pavilion.”
“Floating Nest: Future Birdsongs” collages, time-stretches and resynthesizes the calls of 28 birds native to the Chicagoland area and hypothesizes how a shifting climate would affect the songs they sing.
Curated by Giovanni Aloi ( @dr.aloi ) and Chris Hunter and presented by Experimental Sound Studio (@esschicago ), this exhibition explores the natural voices embedded in the sonance of the city. More info and full schedule at bit.ly/SonicPavilion2024
This exhibition is part of the City of Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Event (@chicagodcase )‘s Millennium Park Residency, supported by Pritzker Foundation and Millennium Park Foundation ( @millennium_park ).

Finally saw the master tapes and original art for #dariushdolatshahi records. These albums deeply shaped who I am, and more people should hear them. Deep gratitude to @smithsonianfolkways for opening their climate-controlled archival doors.
“Sounds to Accompany Sokut”
Special broadcast today with @wavefarmradio in solidarity with the continued #womenlifefreedom movement in Iran. Amazing recent and newly commissioned works by artists in Iran and the diaspora. This spans from poetry reading by my aunt, artists I look up to, and anonymous new works from young sound nerds in Iran. Premier broadcast at 5 PM EST and again at 3 AM for the other side of the world to hear. Link to broadcast in story.

Finally releasing a limited run lathe cut record from the Quarantine Concert last year with @esschicago on my website on August 15th. The record consists of air quality data sonified alongside the Twitch comments from the concert in live time sung by William Salmon. All of the proceeds will be going to @healutah .
Went to visit this brilliant and well-considered exhibition alone today. Thank you for everyone’s energy in putting this together.
Please see Gregory Bae’s show at the MCA. The connections to place and time are endless. It runs through January 29th, 2023.
