The Sound of Clouds and other Sonic Memories - Joel Ong, Omar Shabbar, and Kieran Maraj
Spent a week in New London, Connecticut at the Ammerman Center, Connecticut College setting up this piece I collaborated on with some of my favourite artists. For this piece we conducted interviews, asking participants about their earliest and strongest sonic memory. Those stories manifested into this project.

Project details:
3D printed components, clay, binaural recording
The Sound of Clouds and other Sonic Memories is an ongoing archive of oral narratives/recollections of environmental soundscapes articulated through inter-subjective sensory memories. To accentuate the individuality of each memory, each interviewee additionally provides an image of their ears that are sculpted as closely as possible in clay and included in
a binaural recording system. While the disembodied ears provide a documentation of situated listening, it’s sculpted form also speaks to simulated modes of recording and contests the authenticity of the listening experience that is increasingly mediated and distant in today’s technoscientific worlds.
Really enjoyed my latest Vibrations Matter conversation with Artist @arkfrqs Joel Ong, whom I’ve known for many years. I discovered new sides of his work deepening my understanding of his art addressing sound and vibration, human emotions, and current challenges we face as humanity in a poetic way.
Take the chance to immerse yourself in Joel Ong’s “In Silence”, now on view at the @ucla_artsci Artsci Gallery at CNSI, as part of our @gettymuseum J. Paul Getty Trust @pstinla PSTArt project: Atmosphere of Sound. Closing soon - May 3! 🎶 This work will be a special highlight of our Sound & Science Symposium (May 1–2).
Full Interview will be posted on May 1.
