Big love to everybody who picked up a ticket over the last two years, and made it down to the show last night. It was so lovely to finally play live again, and debut 7 new songs - thanks for the warm appreciation. And to Slow Moving Clouds for being the perfect musical partners on the night - it was amazing to be at a live show again and listen to such lovely music. And a big shout out to Dec & Fiona for making the show happen, taking great care of everybody and putting on such a lovely bill in the most gorgeous settings. We have some new music out next Friday, then it’s back to the mammoth task of completing album number two. Hope to see you all soon again though. S&Cx ❤️

NEW MUSIC | 01/10/21 Inner Spaces by Strands - a new solo album from Mount Alaska's Stephen Shannon Our Steve's new release for Remote Town Records, Inner Spaces, is an expansive, multi-layered album, rooted in nature that is a response to the uncertainty of recent times. More propulsive in rhythm than its predecessor, these tracks draw on influences such as Rival Consoles, Wendy Carlos, Tomita, Max Cooper and Caribou. The Strands moniker was originally intended as a one-album project back in 2010, but in 2020, when lockdowns and travel restrictions were in place, Stephen had a chance to work alone for the first time in many years. An avid collector of vintage synthesisers and musical instruments, he made use of the studio equipment around him and set about making a specific kind of record. “I grew up in a small village in Co. Wicklow, between the mountains and the sea. I spent my summers taking long hikes through fields, forests and along coastlines, listening to music on my Walkman. I made compilation tapes before each excursion, imagining where I would be at precise points on the walk, as each song played. It formed a life-long habit - I still take long walks through the mountains and forests of Wicklow, bringing new playlists for company. Last year, when travel restrictions prohibited me from travelling no more than a few kilometres from home, I compiled a list of all of the places I really wanted to go back to. I began making a piece of music for each location, visualising these spaces. Each track is about a space remembered and all my past journeys there, along with how it felt to return to them post-lockdown. On a track like ‘Sugarloaf’, the song mimics a mountain walk that starts gently, moving upwards like the ascent up a path before finally reaching the top and looking out over the view.” Inner Spaces is an ode to the land, to the spaces we have all missed and the power of music to transport us. Album links to follow on Friday. Be sure to follow @stephenshannon and @remotetownrecords in the meantime.

Parking the revenue-share debate and ignoring the elephant in the room for one day just to say thanks to everyone for listening to, and supporting, our debut album, Wave Atlas: Season One.  Massive shout out to Mick, Ken and Aine, and all the 251 Records / Faction Music fam. Hope you all have sore heads and full hearts after Sorcha and James’ show.  Serious props to the two absolute gents, Steve and Simon, who always make us look and sound like a pair of cool dudes.  And big love to the two vibe managers, Patrice and Sinead, the vibe munchkins, I & M, and the pooches, Jake and Fiadh.  Thanks a million, and roll on Season Two. Our Steve is at it again 🙄 Catch the premiere this evening (YouTube at 7pm) of Steve’s composition One Day, commissioned by Crash Ensemble as part of their [ R E A C T I O N S ] series for Music Town, 2021. In his own words: I created 'One Day' as the first lockdown began, when I - like so many others - was forced into working in isolation. All my life, I have worked collaboratively to create music, so at first it felt very difficult working alone, looking at people on a computer screen. I tried to recreate this feeling, beginning with the noise and bustle of our everyday lives gradually ebbing away, to leave just one isolated instrument. The sonic space slowly fills as I accept this new reality, and begin to work within these new parameters. I created the melody and voice of the piece using two old synthesisers here in my studio, before developing parts for vibraphone, xylophone and trombone. I then used video conferencing to work with Crash Ensemble musicians Roderick O'Keefe (trombone) and Alex Petcu (percussion) to develop these parts. It was a joy to hear the percussion and brass come to life. Overall, I hope to convey a sense of hope for our future with this piece as we slowly emerge from the global pandemic. Our Cillian would like to point out that he got fully dressed twice last week, so in terms of productivity they’re practically even. Enjoy the music, S&Cx ❤️

AMBIENT FLO One of the nicest, most progressive music initiatives to come out of all this mess has been @ambient_flo by @auntie._.flo , so it's a real honour to have Terrain from our latest EP, Coordinates, selected for the month of April. Ambient Flo started as a weekly live stream from Auntie Flo’s garden during the 1st lockdown. It has evolved into a 24-hour radio station with three priorities: Music: an ambient, fourth world and transcendental station curated by Auntie Flo and high calibre guests Health: to transport us from the pressures of everyday life Fair economy: that provides a fairer business model and alternative revenue stream for musicians. Each month the playlists are replenished with new music by Auntie Flo and guest curators. Approximately three hundred songs are handpicked and split into three playlists with the track order changing each day so you never hear the same order of songs twice: Morning: uplifting, consonant, minimal sounds Daytime: more of a pulse and a melody Night: understated and dream-like Birdsong: can be added if you wish. Your listening experience can be active or passive; put on headphones and immerse yourself, or play at a low level to relax, meditate or work. The selection should work discreetly – as per Brian Eno’s original Ambient manifesto – but it should also be of high enough quality that the compositions can be listened to over and over again. As well as Eno, Ambient Flo is heavily influenced by the deep listening movement of the late, great Pauline Oliveros, the 4th world concepts of Jon Hassell, the immense sonic sculptures of Tim Hecker, the spiritual music of Alice Coltrane, and the sonic therapies of Kazuya Nagaya. All of these great visionary artists have acted as musical guides during the inception of Ambient Flo. If you like what you hear, then please support @ambient_flo by listening, sharing with friends and joining their Patreon. Enjoy the music. S&Cx
